Solutions for a Crying Child

Jul 19, 2008
It is a normal activity in the life of a baby to cry. Any baby will cry to communicate what it is feeling to other people. Since they can't talk, they show what they are feel perceiving by crying. If they experience something they don't like, they cry. Typically, babies cry when they are too warm or cold, have a soiled diaper, feel pain or hunger, etc. On occasion, there are babies who just need a presence near them or they will cry. Sometimes a baby will cry without any motive at all. For the most part crying is normal, though it may stress the family of the baby. Because the explanations for crying vary from minor to very serious, a child shouldn't be ignored when crying until the cause has been discovered and treated.

Below are a few points that should be kept in mind when handling a crying baby:

1. It's extremely unsafe to shake a child forcefully.

2. Tight clothes can cause irritation and should be removed.

3. If the room is hot put out a fan and open the windows.

4. Stroking or rubbing a child's back or head can help soothe them.

5. Feeding the baby a mother's milk can have a calming effect.

6. If the weather is very cool try covering her in a comfortable towel.

7. Rock her gently in your arms and walk slowly in the room.

8. Let the child hear soft music.

9. Try a pacifier or help with thumb sucking.

10. If nothing is working, try shifting the position of the baby.

11. Walk outdoors with her.

12. Place the child in a cradle and slowly rock her.

13. If no response ask somebody to carry the baby.

If, after trying all of these tips, the child continues to cry, check for these indications. (A possible reason is given after the indication)

1. Softly push the baby's stomach, they may turn or resist:---Colic

2. Pull the child's ear softly to see if she acts worse or tries to move away from you:---Earache.

3. Feel her temperature with the back of your hands:---Fever due to any infection.

4. Completely check the baby's skin:---measles, vesicles, allergy.

5. Check for anything coming out of the nose:---Head Cold.

6. Move the head gently to feel any neck stiffness:--Meningitis,head injury ect.

7. Listen to the child's chest for any unusual rattling:---Excessive mucus in lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia)

8. Examine the genitalia:--Any discharge or erosion.

9. In a baby boy, inspect the testicles for swelling or sensitivity:---Orchitis, bilateral testicle torsion.

10. You should also be looking for strange movements of the body, such as convulsions, difficulty breathing, rigors, etc.

If you notice anything listed here or anything else unusual, contact your pediatrician for treatment.
