Cosequin - Drug Or Brand?

By Rebecca Foxton

Cosequin is just one of many supplements on the market. If you have heard of it, or bought it, you probably have a dog with joint issues.

To clear up any confusion, let's discuss Cosequin in detail. It is important that consumers understand fully about the product they are buying so they can make an informed choice.

But let's be clear - Cosequin is not a drug; it is a supplement which has the brand name Cosequin. To put it another way, a similar supplement is called Healthy Joints Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM?, it's just a name rather than a unique substance. It's like calling a vacuum cleaner a hoover, and the same thing here, both are joint supplements.

The two products both contain Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Cosequin contains ONLY these two ingredients and nothing else. For example other joint support products also contain Methylsulfonylmethane, sometimes known as MSM. Cosequin does not contain this supplement.

What's the big deal about MSM - well it's quite important for pets with arthritis as it can help control the swelling and pain. So you wouldn't want to give a supplement without it.

So that leaves Cosequin rather less attractive if you are looking for a supplement for dogs with arthritis. It may be a perfectly valid choice for those who want a mainstream joint supplement with Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

There are some advantages to Consequin if it's the supplement for you, it comes in various strengths and you can get it as a chewable and a capsule. If MSM is a must-have, Consequin isn't the supplement for you.

Maybe it was a passing comment from your vet that you should give your dog Consequin, but he may have been using the brand name instead of citing the supplement. Consequin is not the only choice.

Most supplements are interchangeable, but you should ask your vet exactly what supplements are required so you can choose a product that suits your dog's needs exactly. It may be that Cosequin isn't the best product for one dog, but is for another.

MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are apparent in many products. Pet Nutrition products pride themselves on being correctly labelled and made from the very best ingredients.

This is not always the case with inferior brands so save your money and go for a brand like Pet Nutrition which give you a fair deal.
