Adoptions: Checking Child Background and Guidelines

Jul 20, 2008
Most couples plane to have children at some stage in their relationship and often this is the only thing missing from the relationship and for many it doesn't feel complete without a child. People that want to adopt will often contact the church or other charitable organization that have orphans who are in need of a loving family to join. However, it is worth remembering that adoption is not always the answer to the problem for couples who perhaps have given up trying to conceive. Adoption is a big decision to make for any couple, one that has a long lasting impact on their lives but to many it is the only way forward.

Sometimes the birth mother of a child is unable to cope or a single mother is considered unsuitable, yes this still happens in some countries, and as a consequence the child becomes available for adoption. Having a child who is ready for adoption in a foster home close to the new parents is the responsibility of the foster and adoption system. Now there is a push for a more complete and permanent adoption plan of the foster care system by the Department of Social Services brought about by regulation in an attempt to streamline the adoption process which will release more children to adoptive parents.

Adoption can be very expensive and many prospective parents cannot afford the sums being charged by some agencies and these costs can vary depending on how you plan to adopt, but if this is really what you want, do not allow this financial burden to stop you. It's important that the adoption agency's license is up to date so check with your states licensing office before you make any commitment to them.

Adoption has many different aspects that need to be overcome. It is official requirements and paperwork that can delay an adoption but it cannot be finalized until all documents have been completed. In the United States for instance, when the adoption is finalized, the child's name is legally changed and the child receives an amended birth certificate on which the adoptive parent(s) name replaces that of the biological or placing parent(s) and the child's birth name is replaced with his/her new name. It's vital that adoptive parents make themselves aware of the fact that adopted children will probably only comprehend adoption with all its implications when they have entered their second decade of life.

If a couple cannot adopt in their own country then international adoption is an alternative. For many couples that have struggled long and hard within their own country to adopt this often the only route possible. Adopting internationally used to mean that children and their adoptive parents would rarely have any birth parent information at the time of adoption and no chance for any information or contact in the future.

Some couples already have children and often adopt another child as well because they may not be able to have anymore. There are many children worldwide whose only wish is to be part of a loving family and despite many stories to the contrary, adoption opportunities today have improved over recent years.
