Does Yeast Infection in Dogs occur commonly?

Jul 21, 2008
Cats also have been known to get yeast infections although it is more rare than in dogs as the ears of a cat is more likely to stay up. If you happen to smell any foul odor emanating from your pet's ears, it is more likely to be as a result of some infection that needs treatment.

Many vets opt for different modalities of treatment for yeast infection in dogs. One such is the use of diluted and distilled vinegar. This is combined with using a topical ointment containing steroids to control itching sensations. Antifungal creams like Miconosol 1% is sometimes used for treatment although it causes the dog to lick on the application and is more likely to cause a spread of infection to other areas.

You can try many home remedies to try and treat the condition. One such is the use of an antidandruff shampoo to reduce the itching. The pH balance can be brought to normal by rinsing in apple cider vinegar that is diluted.

Controlling and regulating the diet of the dog is also important to ward off recurrent infections and many similar health issues. You can include yogurt in your dog's diet along with tuna water. While the yogurt helps in combating the infection, the tuna water is to make the food more palatable to the dog. Look for yogurt containing live cultures (probiotics).

Some diet recommendations include giving the dog, lamb and rice, cooked chicken, fish, vegetables like potatoes. Any diet changes done might not be well received by your pet so, it is recommended that any changes be done gradually. You can even try mixing some of the old dietary foods with the new ones until the dog begins to accept the new diet.

Have regular check up visits with the vet to see if your dog has any underlying infections, especially in the ears. Regular checkups can also help you know if your dog is suffering from any severe problems. Although in many cases, you might suspect that your dog is suffering from yeast infections and would like to try some remedy that you know, it is always advisable to take an opinion from the vet before you go ahead with the treatment. Although the problem faced by your vet might be yeast infection, the underlying cause to the occurrence of yeast infection might be something more serious.

Behavioral changes are often seen when the pet is not keeping well and is ill with some problem. Often in such cases, the dog might act irritable and edgy or might be dull and lax. An observant owner might see such changes in the dog and should be able to associate with some problem being faced by the pet.

Yeast infection in dogs is a common problem and has to be treated quickly to avoid other complications. It is also necessary to maintain good hygiene for the dog to prevent further recurrence of the infection. It is also important for young children, if any, to keep away from the dog while the treatment for yeast infection is on as there is likelihood that the yeast infection in dogs can be spread to your child.
