Top 3 Things to Consider with Motorcycle Salvage

Jul 22, 2008
Motorcycle salvage is an interesting phenomenon that has helped many motorcycle owners who are looking for a way to fix their bike or add to their bike. Motorcycle salvage is simple; there are motorcycles that are unfortunate enough to find their way to junkyards and used car lots all across the nation. Some may have been impounded, while others have been discarded or found. Either way, the motorcycles in motorcycle salvage have the ability to offer great parts and bikes to those who are looking for them. There are certain precautions and things to look for, however, when considering motorcycle salvage as a way to find parts or motorcycles. While there are many things to look for, there are three major things to consider when considering motorcycle salvage.

What is the Cost?

When many people think of motorcycle salvage, they think of it as a cheap and easy way to find the motorcycle parts that you are looking for. While the "cheap" aspect may be true, the easy part may not be. When thinking of cost, there are a few things that should be considered before jumping into motorcycle salvage to find the parts. What is the cost of the part if purchased brand new? Knowing this cost comes in handy later when looking at motorcycle salvage. This becomes important because of the possible cost of motorcycle salvage. Many people tend to think that motorcycle salvage is free. They feel as though they can walk into a junkyard, find a motorcycle, and grab the parts. For many cases, this is untrue. Using the benefits of motorcycle salvage can actually cost money; many owners of junkyards and used car lots charge fees. Some charge a general fee, while others charge different fees for different parts. If the cost to find a motorcycle salvaged part will be more expensive than a new part, why would you go with motorcycle salvage?

Is it Safe?

It is important to understand the safety of the part that you are buying. If the motorcycle looks rusty and old, it probably is not wise to use this bike for motorcycle salvage. Inspect the part to understand if it is safe to use on your bike. If you do not feel comfortable judging your own motorcycle salvaged parts, take the parts to someone who can look at them for you. It is always important to make sure that the parts on your bike is safe.

Is it Quality?

Once you have found a part, it is important to understand if the part is quality. Knowing the makers and brands of parts can help you to understand the quality of the part that you have found through motorcycle salvage. A motorcycle salvaged part may be cheaper, but if the quality is lower, it may not be worth it. Knowing the quality of parts in general can help you to understand the quality of the parts you find as you find them in your motorcycle salvage treks.
