A Look At the Different Types of Lawyers

Jul 22, 2008
A Lawyer is somebody who can give legal advice and has been trained in the law, they can also be called attorneys and act as both advocates and advisors in American society. In criminal or civil trials in court, the lawyer representing the client is then called an advocate. When lawyers act as advisors they counsel their clients concerning their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular courses of action in business and personal matters.

Although they all can represent their clients in court this is a very rare situation. The work in a courtroom does not appeal to every lawyer because it requires very quick thinking and a confident manner but lawyers who prefer to carry out his work are called trial lawyers. Much of a trial lawyer's work is actually carried out on investigating a case he or she may be defending or prosecuting; talking to witnesses and arranging evidence for the case for example.

The legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society, from buying a home to crossing the street so lawyers hold positions of great responsibility and are obliged to follow a strict code of ethics. Some areas of law are so specialized that a lawyer may never have to appear in a courtroom even though they are all licensed to.

For every area of society, industry and commerce there is a specialist area of law and a reason why only a few practice law in a courtroom. Lawyers who have decided to become experts in environmental law may be representing either side and this can mean working with environmental interest groups to large multinational waste companies or the EPA. Lawyers in this field may be arranging for their clients to carry out certain actions or just as easily representing them in civil actions resulting from work they have already carried out.

Intellectual property rights is one of the newer branches of law designed to protect products from theft and copyright primarily in the field of digital media like computer programs. Insurance companies also employ specialist lawyers who investigate the legality of insurance transactions, writing insurance policies to conform with the law and to protect companies from false claims.

However, the vast majority of lawyers work within the private sector where they can devote their energies to either criminal or civil law. In criminal law, lawyers represent individuals who have been charged with crimes and argue their cases in courts of law but with civil law, lawyers assist clients with litigation, wills, trusts, contracts, mortgages, titles, and leases.

Where there are high profile cases that may include law suits and the like you will find a different type of lawyer that specializes I the type of legal representation that affects the general public for instance. A few lawyers decide to use their knowledge to help the defense and rights of those less fortunate in foreign countries.
