The Interview Decision

By Ray James
Jul 22, 2008
The fate of a candidate is most likely to be decided within the first 10 minutes of an interview. One employer even admitted that he chooses a candidate the moment they enter the room. This employer?s opinion is that the candidate?s body language plays a fundamental role in deciding the candidate?s fitness for the job. It is incredible that a person?s many, many hours of effort and preparation can mean nothing should they not be able to perform well just for few minutes. This is the harsh reality of life so everyone should know how to interview for a job.

Everything commences with the preparation of the CV (Curriculum Vitae); this important piece of documentation presents details of the candidate for the employer to consider. A CV should be exact and should carry all the pertinent information. Proper care should be taken concerning the choice of font and layout.

A candidate?s deportment in the interview room plays a pivotal role in their subsequent success or failure. Guides on how to interview for a job rarely focus on dress sense and grooming. Your clothing should be neat and clean, properly ironed and you should appear well presented and comfortable. Expensive labels are unnecessary. Ensure that your shoes are well polished and that you have a pleasant smile on your face. It is good manners to knock and wait for permission before entering the interview room. All members of the interview panel should be greeted equally. Have all the relevant documents with you. Whilst answering any question, it is vital that you maintain proper eye-contact and that you address all panel members. Excessive use of hand gestures should be avoided as it can be both a distraction and an indication of anxiety. You find that you are not able to understand a question there is no problem in politely asking the interviewer to repeat the question. When you are answering a question, be polite and also brief.

The most important thing about how to interview for a job is in knowing that an interviewer is not merely interested in the answer. They already know the answer; what the interviewer is actually interested in discovering is how adequately you deliver those answers and your overall attitude and demeanour during the interview.

A candidate might answer all the questions brilliantly but still may not be selected for the position. They may become distressed and unable to comprehend why they were unsuccessful. The reason may be simple. One way to virtually guarantee success in an interview is to create your own ?Unique selling proposition? (USP). This little creation is a great help in creating a distinct image and can persuade the interviewer that you are not just a candidate but the most suitable candidate for the job, blessed with many qualities other job-seekers do not possess. Your USP should affirm something individual about you which no one else will have. No guide, no tips on how to interview for a job will help you obtain that job if you do not have self confidence and the ability to handle stress.
