Family Participation In The Alcohol Treatment Program In Connecticut

Jul 23, 2008
The family of the patient is a very significant factor in the alcohol treatment program in Connecticut. At every stage of the program they have to put in their contribution in order to bring the patient out of the dependency and into living a life of sobriety. The following are the ways in which the families are expected to participate in the alcohol treatment program in Connecticut.

Planning the Intervention for the Alcohol Treatment

The first thing that the family will have to do is to convince the patient for the treatment. This is not an easy process, considering that more than ninety percent of the alcoholic patients in the state are in some form of denial or the other. These people do not want to recognize their alcohol habit as a treatable condition. They are too happy with their addiction to consider any treatment.

However, families can help patients to get out of their denial. Typically, they form intervention groups. These are groups that include the members of the family who come together to motivate the patient to get into a treatment center. They will prepare speeches and then speak them out to the patient in order to encourage them. They will help the patient understand that they care for them and need to see them in an addiction-free life. This part of the program becomes most emphatic only when the family does it, and this is certainly the biggest contribution that the family provides towards the addiction treatment.

Selecting the Treatment Center and Handling the Admission Process

Since people who are with an addiction are not in the right frame of mind to select an addiction treatment center for themselves, this responsibility lies with the family of the patient. After helping the patient overcome the denial, some members of the family may meet a counselor for alcohol treatment in Connecticut and ask them what treatment options are available in the state. The counselor explains the treatment options in detail and also suggests a mode of treatment for the patient taking their extent of addiction and physical and mental condition into consideration. The family would then think over these options, check out their financial capabilities to handle the treatment and then make a decision on which treatment center they must go for.

Seeking the admission in the center is another point that the families have to look into. Connecticut has a high demand for alcohol treatment from both local people as well as people from other states. As such, getting a treatment center is not quite simple. Family interventioners will help the patient get the admission and handle all the documentation and paperwork that might be needed.

Keeping Abreast of the Alcohol Treatment Program

It is important that the families keep themselves aware of how the treatment program is progressing. This helps them to know whether an improvement is taking place or not. Family members will usually collaborate with the treatment center to know what kind of progress is being made and what they can do to help in the treatment. Sometimes patients develop denial even when they are into the treatment program. At such times, it becomes the responsibility of family members to encourage the patient to stay with the treatment center and if there is some genuine problem that the patient is facing, then the family members can take it up with the officials at the treatment center and see what can be done.

Helping during the Aftercare

Again here, the families have to provide immensely valuable moral support and guidance to the patient. The aftercare begins when the patient is out of the detox treatment. Alcohol detox in Connecticut is for about four days after which the aftercare process begins in an outpatient treatment center or in a residential treatment center depending on how intense the patient's withdrawal has been.

The family is coached by the treatment center as to how they can become a constructive force in keeping the patient away from getting re-addicted to the substance. They are taught by the counselors to reintroduce the patient slowly but surely into social life so that the temptation for the substance is distracted. The patient may also take up a job again through the efforts of the family. Moreover, the family learns how to identify the signs and symptoms of an impending relapse attack and what to do if that actually happens.

Hence, it can be seen that the family is absolutely vital to the alcohol treatment program in Connecticut. They are a moral and physical support for the patient to come out of the dependency for the bottle.
