Water Purification

Jul 24, 2008
When selecting the proper water purification system for your home, it is better to choose any water purifier rather than not choosing at all. Indeed, there are some differences among water purifiers. Some water purifiers work better or are more efficient than others. It is important to realize that the difference in price does not translate into a difference in quality. We are providing you here with some important information that can help you when searching for the appropriate water system for your home.

Health and safety are the primary considerations for water purification. Public treatment facilities try to protect our health in a number of ways. First and foremost, to them, is disinfection.

Now, if you are not serviced by a treatment facility, then you must consider your source, before you choose a water purifier. Public treatment facilities use a number of steps, because so many different contaminants are present. You might actually need two or three different types of water purifiers, depending on your source.

For example, this would be unusual of course, but suppose your source is a river or lake. For complete lake or river-water purification, you need reverse osmosis, selective filtration and distillation, in that order. Because, each of these water purifiers targets specific contaminants, but misses others. Let's look at each.

A reverse osmosis water purifier removes inorganic contaminants that are larger molecularly than water's. Unless your source is a lake or river, you probably do not need this step. If you are serviced by the public's water purification program, this step or something similar has already been performed. Reverse osmosis water purifiers do not remove herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, THMs or bacterial contaminants.

A distillation water purifier is necessary to kill bacteria, but boiling is just as effective. If you are serviced by a treatment facility, disinfection has already been performed, so unless there has been a heavy storm or a similar situation, E. coli and other bacteria have been removed. Only bacteria still in the cyst stage of development would be present.

Selective filtration water purification involves the use of a variety of filtering media to remove a number of different contaminants. The quality and number of stages in a water purifier will affect the performance and contaminant removal. You should always read product performance data, before you buy.

We should analyze the steps followed by one of the best multi-stages water purifiers on the market. To start with, activated carbon granules remove chemicals, disinfection byproducts and chlorine. The next step consists of a multi-media block that captures gaseous contaminants, for example THMs. The bacterial cysts cannot be removed by the public water purification, but the sub-micron sized pores of the block can.

In the final step, the water is purified using an ion exchange stage. This step is done trough the ionic exchange of the lead and other metallic contaminants for potassium and sodium. The final result that is achieved through the last step is a better taste and healthfulness due to the balancing of the pH level and an improved mineral content.

For most homes selective filtration water purifiers are all that is necessary, but in cases of floods or even heavy rains, E. coli bacteria may be present. Typically, the public water purification facility will make efforts to inform homeowners when that is the case. If that happened, you would want to filter first and then boil. Drink safely.
