Reveal your own Leadership Power from Within

Jul 24, 2008
There is a great debate that has been going on for years as to whether leaders are born or if they are made. Each side feels that they are heavily armed with proof that they are right. The truth of the matter is they are both right. Everyone is born with everything they need to become a leader, however many people don't realize that they have those qualities. When people don't realize that they possess leadership qualities they go out and learn how to become a leader.

The bottom line is that everything you need to be the next great leader you already have. Now you just need to find those qualities within yourself. Understand that becoming a leader is a process. Don't expect to be the low man on the totem pole today and king of the hill tomorrow. Finding the leader within you is a journey and it is one that you need to be dedicated to.

As a side note, it's important to mention that people who are leaders in their industry, leaders in their jobs are also leaders in their personal lives. Being a leader isn't something that can be simply turned on and off. This is because leadership isn't a job, it is the type of person you are, and it is who you are.

What qualities or attributes do leaders have? First of all, if you're a leader, you have integrity. In fact, this is the most important quality you have to have. If people are going to follow you, they are going to be doing what you're asking of them. You must be moral and ethical and follow through on what you're saying if this is true. Integrity can be thought of as having the wherewithal to be able to tell your children or grandmother what you do and not be ashamed of it.

As a leader, you also need to be consistent. You need to decide the direction you want to go in and then stick with it. Don't walk into your company one day and tell everyone that you're taking it to the next level, to increase the company's presence in the industry, and then the next week to say that you need to cut the budget and downgrade company technology. Establish a goal and then work toward that goal every day to make sure it's accomplished.

You also need to know your business deeply in order to be successful leader. Educate yourself as you need to so that you know what you're talking about. Of course, people like to deal with those who know what they're talking about and can tell them what their company can do for them. This can't be faked and is going to garner you disrespect if you don't do it. I'm sure you've talked to someone who is a so-called "professional" and yet had no idea what he or she was talking about. This is going to hurt your business, so make sure you know what you're doing.

Of course, you're going to make mistakes; everyone does. And the key to good leadership is that you have to own up to it when you do so. Don't hide it, don't deny it, and don't pretend it didn't happen. If you do this, you're going to lose respect from those you need it most from. In addition, you'll need to be able to listen and take opinions and criticisms from others, perhaps direction as well. Make decisions. Listen to other people, but if the decision is yours to make, you'll need to make the final decision. If you know how to do so, you can bring out your own leadership qualities and make sure they are present in every area of your life.
