Things to check when your sewing machine is not working

Jul 24, 2008
Has this ever happened to you? You are piecing together two pieces of fabric to make a dress when suddenly your machine begins to loop the thread on the top or the bottom and then the thread breaks. Many potential sewers often give up when a problem like this occurs. In fact even the most avid of sewers become frustrated when such trouble arises. Luckily, many times such a problem stems from the user and not the machine; meaning the user can easily fix the machine in many cases.

When thread breakage or looping is creating difficulties, a primary thing to check is your machine's tension. Improperly set machine tension, whether it is a setting too low or too high, can result in thread breakage. Checking to make sure the machine tension is set at an optimal setting can assist in evading the possibility of thread breakage.

A different problem that often leads in thread breakage is imprecise threading. Often sewers who have used their machine for a long time they presume that their experience makes them impervious to mistakes. This is often untrue as anyone can make a mistake and even the most skilled of sewers are not immune to making an accident, such as incorrectly threading the machine, which results in thread breakage. To prevent problems with threading your machine it is important to check that thread comes off the spool in a flowing and even manner. You are at a much higher risk for thread breakage if the thread does not lift from the spool smoothly.

A commonly repeated mistake is wrongly threading the tension assembly. Numerous users recognize that there is a tension assembly on the machine; surprisingly users despite this knowledge, thread it improperly. In order to correctly thread the machine one must "floss" the thread into the tension assembly, this will allow your machine to apply the appropriate quantity of upper tension.

Another ordinary mistake that consequently leads to thread breakage is inappropriate threading of the take up lever. Countless sewers are oblivious to the importance of the take-up lever, not realizing it is a critical part to recognize when threading a sewing machine. The result of this ignorance sometimes leads sewers to inadvertently fail to get thread over the take-up lever. Failure to get the thread over the take-up lever results in thread breakage so to prevent thread breakage make sure to get the thread over the take up lever.

Many sewers are unsure of the type of bobbin their machine uses. If you use the incorrect bobbin for your machine you could cause thread looping or irregular thread feeding. Make sure you are using the correct bobbin and that the bobbin is inserted in the machine correctly to help prevent a potential problem. Consult the user manual for your machine for the proper size bobbin and how to properly install the bobbin.

A clean machine is also necessary for smooth sewing. This does not just mean a clean outer appearance; the inside of the machine must also be free from dirt and dust. If there are clumps of dust or thread in the thread linkages, bobbin case, gears, etc. it must be removed. Removing dirt from the inside of the machine can help the machine move freely and help rid your machine of a potential thread breakage problem.

A machine kept in optimal shape through regular maintenance and upkeep can prevent many hardships for the user. Consistently keeping up on you sewing machine and taking it in to a reliable sewing machine mechanic for cleaning and lubrication helps avoid future potential problems. Another thing to keep in mind is although many modern sewing machines are referred to as non-oiling machines (meaning the user does not have to lubricate their machine), however it is important to have your machine occasionally oiled by a professional. A professional sewing machine mechanic will grant attention to all the parts on your sewing machine and make sure that the proper parts are lubricated.

Keeping a clean and well-threaded machine can help prevent your machine from snapping thread. Following these simple steps can help save you time, thread and prevent unnecessary frustration.
