The Story Behind The Cristiano Ronaldo Soap Opera

Jul 24, 2008
One of the most talked about and intriguing stories of this year's summer is the transfer speculation surrounding none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. Ever since leading Manchester United to one of their most successful seasons ever, Ronaldo has been out telling the world that he's looking to leave the club that bought him and nursed him as a teenager. The media has fallen prey to it and there has not been a day without a headline about Ronaldo. The heavyweights such as the FIFA President have even commented on the issue and every football fan has developed their own opinion. That said, many facts have been mixed and twisted in the process, which I am not too pleased about. Because of that, this article has been written to summarise the facts, nothing more, nothing less.

First Fact. Ronaldo committed to playing at Manchester United by signing a 5 year contract in the spring of 2007. In fact, by signing the contract he became the club's highest ever paid player. But what does this mean? It means that the club held Ronaldo and his talent is such high esteem that they made him central to United's future plans to win trophies, and as a result he was offered a higher salary. This also effectively means that a breaking of the contract would disadvantage the club and its plans rather than Ronaldo. The club will be the loser in such a sorry situation while the criminal will be Ronaldo himself.

Second Fact. When the club purchases a player, they also purchase their rights to that player meaning that transfers are only negotiated between clubs. Now, this may seem unfair to the players, but the fact is that any player whose club acts against his wishes can protest and stop playing for the club forcing the club to bow to their demands.

Nevertheless, just because a player no longer wants for a club does not give him the right to break his contract. Signing a contract implies a commitment, a strong commitment, and this must be honoured. Unless the club has done something to harm the player, then yes, the player does have an argument to leave the club. But what harm has United done to Ronaldo? None. In fact, they've given him the world. Culprit: Ronaldo Victim: United

FACT 3. There is no legitimate reason for changing clubs. No racism such as what Etoo has suffered for many years from the fans in La Liga. No rift with the coach Sir Alex Ferguson, in fact, it is largely due to Sir Alex that Ronaldo is one of the best footballers on the planet. No rift with management or owners, well, at least none that is going around media circles. However, most importantly, there has been no lack of success. Ronaldo has been so successful at United, so why would you want to leave a successful organisation? Culprit: Ronaldo Victim: United

Sir Alex Ferguson put so much faith in him when he bought for a record fee for a teenager in 2003. He has since been justified and Ronaldo has grown into one of the most feared footballers going around. Now it seems the club is getting back slapped after putting so much faith in him.

The 2 words that come to mind when thinking about this soap opera are loyalty and respect. In fact, the lack of this shown by Ronaldo to United is what shines through. Ok, so he's won everything there is to win at United. That still does not justify the faith that the club has put in Ronaldo to keep bringing trophies. What was going through his head on the 13th of April when he signed that contract? Did he really think that he could break the contract whenever he wanted to since he was their highest profile player? Did he think he could do anything he wanted at any time?

The impact of Generation Y footballers is being felt throughout football. It is a very confident generation, often over-confident and hence accused of being arrogant. This kind of description fits Ronaldo pretty well. Hugely motivated by money and feeling that they can do whatever they want, is what has led to a lack of respect and loyalty towards clubs. It's not just limited to Ronaldo, but he is main figure due to his position in the game.

The lack of loyalty and respect among young players in football is reaching epic proportions to the point that I expect more cases like Ronaldo's to be appearing in the upcoming season. The problem with the loss of club loyalty is that clubs will forever be affected because players will not spend enough time at a single club to become an idol. The fans and the club will be the biggest losers in this situation. Football cannot afford to lose fans and clubs anywhere in the world. This is why young players must be taught more about club loyalty and respect today.
