Recycled Products Make Unique Gifts

By Nicole Maschwitz

The processing of waste has been around for some time, but today family members are taking a more important approach to there recycling. With talks swarming around about green house emissions and global warming, families everywhere are trying to reduce the effects that they are each having on the environment. The best help has come from awareness, the greatest awareness has been from eductaion. Education through media, and in our class rooms, with environmental sustainability being a hot subject matter in our schools.

This education is happening all around the world; on my trip to Africa, I was pleased to find evidence of this in Swaziland. Swaziland is located in southern Africa, and is one of the smallest countries on the African continent. There, help from a company is paying dividends. Efforts are being made by the company, and citizens, to recycle through creating products. In turn, this helps residents earn an income for the local community.

The company in question makes the most amazing hand blown sculptures through recycled glass products. The company itself organizes clean up days in the nearby regions. Where adults and school children alike are encouraged to collect the recyclable glass products. The company in turn creates employment, and also sponsors local schools, which helps to sustain them. The awareness this creates is not only encourageable its a valuable lesson to all.

Once the company has all the recyclable bottles, they are then placed in a large gas fired furnace. Firstly the glass goes through a crushing process and then the glass is melted down. Next is my favourite step, the artisans use a combination of hand and mouth blowing techniques, to make the most amazing creations. All of which have a a hint of Africa in them.

The creations that are made have to be seen to be believed. Each glass sculpture captures the artisans own character, and no two sculptures are the same. Each sculpture has it's own unique charateristics. The assortment of products that are available vary from animal sculptures, bottle stoppers right down to vases and glassware.

People are always in search of that unique gift, something that stands out from the rest, something that has a story behind it. Knowing that the products being manufactured are helping feed and support communities in Africa, the company is also trying to instill environmental awareness in the people of these remote communities. This needs to be recognized and encouraged.

This world of ours would be far better off, if more large corporations took an invested interest in our environment.
