Travel in Style: Slings and Backpack Baby Carriers

Jul 25, 2008
What was once old fashioned is modern once more. For many centuries, parents have transported their infants in slings on their backs or close to the heart. Although they have not been the style in most Western societies for some time, they have returned to fashion with a bang.

But this outmoded practice has been modified to suit the contemporary world, where it's frequently called 'babywearing', and has superior advantages to its ancient counterpart.

Baby slings are fashioned from material, often nylon or some type of fiber mix. They are flexible, comfy for both baby and parent, and offer a safe way to transport your little one. In addition, they allow the transfer of body warmth so the baby stays comfortable at the same time as providing physical contact that's of benefit to both parent and baby.

There is an amazing variety of styles to be had.

Some baby carriers are in the form of a wrap that is patterned after early Asian techniques. They loop around the parent's back and waist, and then wind around to make a sling in which the infant is able to lie or sit in a secure manner. Other carriers are similar to a knapsack with a few of the components taken off. The straps lie securely over the shoulders and a wide belt wraps about the waist.

Either type permits a baby to be conveyed on either the back or the front, and both positions have their benefits. In the front, the little one is positioned near the chest, from where it is able to look at or reach for the parent's face. This produces a precious attachment that soothes the baby and will delight any parent. If put on the back, the burden is spread among your various muscles, making it more comfortable for a parent to transport the infant for a longer time.

In either situation, children can face towards the parent or away, both of which also have their advantages. Facing the parent, the baby is held near and is able to observe and experience that it is secure. Looking outward, they are able to more easily discover their surroundings, which encourages awareness and the development of thinking processes, and also keeps the baby busy and content.

Backpack-style carriers provide similar advantages, with some differences. A backpack carrier is a bit more sturdy and has extra spots to fasten harnesses and pockets. It allows for a somewhat more rigid structure, therefore babies are able to sit upright more effortlessly.

The backpack style makes it simpler to reposition the weight load to your shoulders, where the child can be carried for extended periods of time. This is particularly advantageous if you're going on a nature hike or a lengthy excursion to the shopping mall.

Every one of the various styles are available in any conceivable color and pattern. Some present woodland images, while others feature pictures of trains. Some might feature just an abstract design. Indeed, you can find any imaginable style to accommodate personal preferences and interests.

Traditional rigid carriers, such as a car seat or carriage, will always have their place. However, slings and backpacks provide benefits that those products can't. All parents will wish to own one of each.
