Benefits of Writing
Like all other art forms, from painting, to poems, to playing music, writing in itself is a reward that can only be given from itself. Just like painting a beautiful picture, sculpting clay or playing the grand piano, writing is able to bring joy to the participant. The best part about it is that the reward is generally doubled because the person writing is able to produce something that he/she is proud of that can be shared with others who will appreciate it. No matter what you are writing, whether it is a story, poem, fable or an article, writing has benefits that can't be beat. Here are a few benefits of writing:
1. Independent thinking. If you think about it, writing requires you to think. You have to think about a topic to write about, how you are going to write it, what words you want to use, what types of sentences will fit best and the overall message that you are trying to give off in your writing. When writing, no matter how old or young you are, you have to have a clear path for you to think on. To write, you have to be able to understand what is around you as well as understand yourself.
2. Self expression. Writing is a great way to express feelings, problems and anything that we want to get off our chests and onto paper. It is much easier to express things on paper (for some) than it is to say by mouth. Writing is another way to communicate with others, especially in situations that may be frustrating, embarrassing or just too hard to talk about face to face. Writing allows everyone to free themselves from any hardships that may be occurring.
3. Writing is a great confidence builder. One of the biggest benefits of writing is that it can increase self confidence and self esteem in the writer. Writing tends to be an activity engaged in by oneself - but can be helpful in boosting confidence by allowing the writer to create something worthwhile which they can point to with a sense of accomplishment. As a writer progresses, they learn that they can indeed express themselves and be understood by others. Children who have problems with self confidence especially can benefit from writing.
4. Building speaking as well as reading skills. In order to become or be a good writer, you have to know how to speak and how to read. Someone with good writing skills is able to help others to learn how to speak better. Others are able to find themselves in the writer and then express themselves through that.
5. Health benefits. Believe it or no, writing even has health benefits. Writing is something which can be a coping strategy for the writer, allowing them to deal with stress. Fiction writers especially are able to put their own experiences on the page and work through them in this way. Writing can also be a good way to present and preserve memories.
Whatever you write you will know once you are done that you have managed to put something of yourself on the page - and hopefully, have created something which you can be proud of.
