Using a Secured Credit Card For Fast, Effective Credit Repair

Jul 28, 2008
If you have ever been approved for a credit card, paid a monthly bill, or taken out a loan, you have a credit rating. This credit rating is compiled for you by a credit reporting agency that gets their information from creditors you owe money to or otherwise deal with. Often times, when you are unable to get credit, it is due to one of these credit reports. A negative credit report comes from missing payments on credit cards or loans, or, even worse, having one of your creditors send one of your outstanding debts to a collection agency.

If you find yourself facing such a negative credit rating, it is important that you get working on this problem as soon as possible. Even though it seems like it might be too much work to handle, not dealing with such problems results in your credit rating remaining the same for up to seven years. Such a rating will give you all sorts of grief and will likely prevent you from obtaining any type of loan.

One of the most important steps in this credit reparation project is getting some sort of secured credit card. Usually you will find that if you have a poor credit rating, it will be very difficult to get approved for a credit card. This proves to be a sort of catch-22 because without such a credit card it is impossible to prove to creditors that you can be responsible and pay bills on time.

In order to get around this problem, you should research what is called a "secured credit card." This kind of credit card is made precisely for people with a poor credit rating. Usually, these credit cards require some sort on initial deposit that will become equal to your credit limit. For example, if you initially deposit $500, then your credit limit will also be $500. The issuer of such a card will then be able to insure that if you do develop any outstanding charges, they will be covered.

Clearly, a secured credit card carries no risk to the issuer because they can use your deposit against any outstanding debts. Because of the lack of risk, the cards can be issued with little discretion, even to people with poor credit. The down side to one of these cards is that they often have annual fees that most regular credit cards do not.

Once you have obtained a credit card, you can begin to repair your credit score by using it regularly but with discrimination and, of course, by making all payments on time. By doing this, you will slowly repair your credit. In actuality, what you are doing is proving to creditors that you are capable of making payments on time and can be trusted with credit.

If you chose not to take such proactive steps toward repairing your credit such as obtaining a secured credit card, your credit rating will remain static for several years. Credit reporting agencies keep marks on your report for up to seven years, it is therefore imperative that you take steps to improve your credit quickly. By obtaining a secured credit card and using it responsibly, you will be able to improve your own credit and reduce the amount of time you will have to wait to be offered credit once again.
