Siberian Husky: Breeding Practices

Jul 29, 2008
There is hardly any other dog breed that can match the Siberian Husky in terms of sheer looks, but you also need to be aware that it is not the ideal pet to bring home if you are a first time pet owner. The Siberian Husky likes roaming about and that is reason enough to never let it out without being leashed because not only can he easily lose himself, but he may cause other people some harm as well.

When it comes to Siberian Husky care and Siberian Husky breeding there is a lot you need to learn about, including being careful to breed him so that he makes an excellent show dog. This will ensure that he will then be a good ambassador for his breed and both his mental and physical characteristics should pass close scrutiny. He should also be bred to be a good running dog and he should also prove good at doing his normal functions without in any way acting in a manner other than that of a good, loyal and obedient pet dog.

There are several aspects to consider if you want to succeed with Siberian Husky breeding including knowing all about its hereditary problems. This is a common downside in Siberian Huskies, and once you know these problems, it is then necessary for you to find a way so that they do not continue in the line of dogs that you are breeding. Among important hereditary problems that affect the Siberian Husky even in spite of providing proper Siberian Husky care is the problem of juvenile cataracts.

Other worrying hereditary problems include hip dysplasia which can cripple any Siberian Husky no matter how much care you provide it with, and which is commonly seen in poor lines among Siberian Huskies.

Siberian Husky breeding is not to be taken casually or lightly because then you would be no better than puppy-mills or like other unscrupulous breeders who care little about proper breeding practices and are more concerned about making a fast buck. And, with the present day trend of cesarean sections becoming a lot more common, it has led to many poor lines of Siberian Huskies being bred, all because of a problem with something called uterine inertia.

It is problems such as these that are ruining the Siberian Husky breed, and as a responsible breeder you need to do something about this and also other problems such as thyroid problems which affects the skin and coat as well as reproductive system in the breed, causing poor lines to be bred in the process.

Providing good Siberian Husky care can often cost the owner a fair bit of money and because testing the animal to enable early detection of problems is both necessary and recommended as well as expensive, good breeders will need to have enough funds to ensure that this very important aspect of Siberian Husky breeding is not overlooked.

It means that genetic screening should be a fundamental aspect to the breeding process as it is sign that the animal has been well bred.
