What You Didn't Know About Hair Weaves

Jul 30, 2008
A woman's clothing, attitude, and presence are all ways that she can define her personality. Hair weaving is a very popular way of allowing women to express themselves through their hairstyles. Weaves are often called 'hair integration' or 'extensions'.

If you're afraid of weaves, it's important to keep in mind that the styles have changed a lot since the 'awful' weaves of the 60s. These weaves never properly blended with the natural hair and always looked fake. With today's modern hair-weaving techniques, short styles like pixie cuts, bobs, and other chin-length styles look even better!

There are many factors to consider if you're thinking of getting a hair weave, from the type of hair weaving technique to the type of extension hair used. Types of extension hair can be summed up in two basic categories: human and synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is less expensive than human hair, but it has come a long way since the early days of synthetic hair. Now, you can find synthetic hair that comes on a weft form and that can be styled using heated styling appliances.

There are also three basic types of attachment methods: sewn-in, bonded, and fusion. The sewn-in method is favored because the process does not use any glues or chemicals, making it the healthiest choice for your hair. The bonded method uses bond adhesive to attach the hair, and the fusion method uses melted adhesive.

Here are four important facts to keep in mind when it comes to hair weaves:

1. Always visit your stylist bi-weekly to ensure your hair and scalp are being properly maintained.

2. A hair weave needs tightening or reattaching throughout its lifetime. This is because a weave is blended with your natural hair, and natural hair grows. Make sure to check with your stylist for specific instructions on caring for your new hair weave.

3. Wait at least two weeks before washing your hair after you get a hair weave. This will give the weave ample time to set.

4. Replacing your cotton pillowcase with one made of satin or silk will reduce rubbing while you sleep and keep your hair weave from losing its shine.

Even though your new hair weave is a fun and exciting change, remember that your natural hair is still underneath. That means it's more important than ever to maintain a healthy scalp. Always wash and condition your hair regularly. But beforehand, make sure your stylist explains the proper care for your weave. For example, washing and conditioning a bonded weave can make the tracks slip right out.

A stylist will charge you depending on the length of your extension hair, the attachment method, and the type of hair used. The price for hair weaving services may range from $200 to $1,500.

Hair weaves usually last anywhere from six to eight weeks if completed and maintained properly.
