5 Tips to improve English learning for Engineers

The world of engineering has taken giant strides in the advancement of civilization. From creating new machinery to building new structures, engineering impacts our lives daily. All this progress translates into higher demand for engineers. Many people are of the opinion that engineering is mainly a technical job involving very less communication. They ignore the importance of English in developing their communication skills, thus losing out on valuable career opportunities. If you are an aspiring engineer who wishes to have a great career start or growth, you need to be proficient in both English speaking and writing.

Five tips to improve English for engineers:

1. Areas of focus

Engineers have a different set of requirements than rest of the students. They have certain key areas where they need to be strong in order to pass interviews and communicate to their superiors. Some of the key factors are abbreviations, certain adjectives like 'reliable', 'trustworthy', etc. They may have to concentrate on certain types of manuals, opposites, etc. On situational studies, they can practice on troubleshooting cases, making presentations, etc.

2. Key vocabulary

Engineers should build their vocabulary pertaining to their fields. Some of the key vocabulary words are as below:

1. Rusty, reliable, trustworthy.
2. Vertical, horizontal, clockwise and anti clockwise.
3. Opposites like 'loose/tight', 'plug/unplug'
4. Position description 'In the top right corner'.
5. Engineering words that have different technical meanings.

Many online English learning classes provide a bunch of English vocabulary specific to engineering domain.

3. Textbooks

There are numerous English text books catering to specific careers. You will have to find a book that specializes in engineering English. Though you may find some of the books very bland and mundane, there are lots of materials online and offline which has attractive designs. These textbooks will give you a good base for learning to speak and write English fluently.

4. Games

Engineers are supposed to be expert in solving puzzles. One of the fun and innovative ways to learn English is to design games and puzzles around it. This will make learning English immersive for them and captivate their attention for longer periods of time. Many online classes teach English expertly with the help of such interactive games.

5. Action description

An engineer has to do a lot of activity. Hence, one of the best methods to learn English is to practice by saying the description of the engineering activities usually performed. This will have the added benefit of increasing their creative aspects as well. Engineers will be able to conduct presentations confidently based on their new English communication skills.

The above five tips will help engineers master the global language of English. It will aid them in making a stellar career in engineering.
