6th of 7 Tips: You As Berlin's Adored Chocolate Bomber

Jul 31, 2008
When you are paid to do a job, you make sure that job is done while you on on your watch. You do your duty. And more. And then beyond that. And at some rare times in the life of a man- or you or I - there can be a moment that could have been gone in a passing moment. Your job is deliver ten tons of coal in each flight to stock pile coal for the incoming winter. You have been told, as if you needed to, that the word is out the the world for the first known time in modern history, has run of food in that winter of 1947 1948.

In Vancouver we sent food packages to feed the starving people of Europe I well recall, helping mom, and we had little. mom she said the children of Europe had no food. We at least had a great backyard garden, which made me feel very fortunate. I nurtured our garden with mom from then on until it just become a serene pleasing way to work and talk. But that time in Europe was apparently true hell on earth, and the war was long over. There were still millions of unknown - until your family stepped on one - unexploded bombs in fields and land mines.

All over Europe we heard therewere simply too many dangerous farms yet to find, search and destroy: the remnants of the war, or be destroyed. How you plant your fields when you see some of your family or even your new horses or cattle blown apart by hidden land mines becomes an unlikely process to grow food for yourself, let alone the people in the towns and the cities. But this sixth tip is that you look and see beyond what you are doing. How this pilot did that, unexpectedly to him or anyone on their first heavy coal laden flight from the west.

Then, upon delivering their cargo of American life saving coal into that narrow field - I have seen the Tempelhof field and there is not a lot of room- the airman stood by the gates, and began being playful with the local kids by the gate. How his playful arms aloft causing to smile, and looping around relaxing them more, he played and found himself, I imagine seeing the light in a way that now carries him so happily in his retirement well earned. He made trickling motions out from one hand from his other hand and they laughed.

Then his eyes lit up: there was more. His one hand headed out to his right, while his other hand now came in as if for a landing. The children were transfixed, but utterly mystified. What was he doing? He shushed them with a motion, and was gone. The next morning it seemed half the children were in that field next over to the coal drop. They were in a very dangerous flight path adjacent huge drops and anything could have wrong. Winter was not yet here and that pile of life saving coal had to reach the sky.

They saw an aircraft approach: it wriggled its wings! It must him! They watched the aircraft come down over the coal dump and as the other aircraft begun to close its bomb bay doors, although not completely. And it began to arc to the the right than the necessary flight path straight ahead to avoid the oncoming waves of coal bombers right on his tail. He felt he easily missed that incoming coal plane, but we understand all h... Broke loose after he turned over that next field over and began a lower and slower descent down into the faces of those glistening alert Berlin childrens faces.

And the kids watch the bomb bay doors open and they watched, and their lives came alive as they never could have imagined, and these children my age but who had only known savage war and bullets and starvation and fear saw little magical parachute hankies floating down towards them. Gifts from God? From Got in Himmel? No, chocolate ration from the boys of America, enjoy. And can you imagine as the children who had never experienced joy ran around, laughing, nervous and excited beyond anything their angelic little souls could ever have imagined.

These children were not two miles from Hitler's Bunker and all that had implied and caused, saw chocolate rations of the airmen floating down: theirs to run laugh and catch. It was a party they would never forget, and it was grudgingly finally allowed to go on the duration of those long cold merciless winter months with uncaring Mongol soldiers at your every door opening. Not this way, nyet. We read about how the children cried, they blew kisses; their laughter could surely have been soon heard in Moscow and so it was.

Because one special man saw what his small effort could do, if it didn't get him hanged or shot. It was a near miss but mighty America realized in the end this one small man had done something in its way really made the micro loving gesture to the macro saving of a nation's heart and soul. How you manage your life in such wholesome good ways will be determined by the relaxed laughter in the eyes souls and hearts of those who love and rely on us.

When Jack Kennedy said we are all Berliners, they already knew that. I bet there chocolate bar wrappers in the soul of each Berliner there. They could in their hearts of hearts say, not just because of the wall, but we learned early in life it was a joy to feel connected, and ich also Jack F. K. Am ein Amerikkaner. Ya and das ist for shure.
