Conducting An Alcohol Intervention Program In New Mexico

Jul 31, 2008
New Mexico has an astounding number of alcoholics, but what is more alarming is that most of these alcoholic people are not into any kind of addiction treatment. Though there are several options for alcohol treatment in New Mexico, it is appalling to see how families ignore these treatment centers and allow people in their homes go deeper and deeper into alcoholism until they reach the point of no return where they succumb to some kind of alcoholism related health problem or the other.

The one way that can bring these people into treatment is through conducting an alcohol intervention program. An alcohol intervention program in New Mexico is generally carried out by the families of the alcoholics because they have the greatest influence on the people. Through a series of sessions for motivating and encouraging the people they are able to create in them the need for treatment and actually get them into a relevant mode of treatment.

Here is how an alcohol intervention program in New Mexico is conducted:-

Creating the Intervention Group

The first step will be to create an intervention group. This is a group of people who will be dedicated to bringing the person out of the denial mode and into alcohol treatment. You can prepare this group by getting together people from the family, but it is not necessary. You can also get friends of the alcoholic patient to get into the group. People who are closely related to the patient, such as their employers if they are working or their teachers and principals of the institutions where they are studying, could be good for motivating them. You could also plan on including some other relevant people like a religious head or some such person who could earnestly influence the person to get out of the addition.

Typically, a group that can participate in an alcohol intervention program in New Mexico can consist of three to seven people, at least this is what the intervention specialist will tell you if you using one of them. However, since this is a non-institutional family group, it can have more people, provided you select each one carefully and make them understand what the mission of forming the group is.

The Initial Session with the Intervention Group

The first session with the intervention group is conducted in the absence of the patient. Here, the various people of the group are introduced to each other and they are explained what the missions of the program are. This is very important because the people must be made to know that they very reason they are bonding as a group is in order to bring the patient out of the denial.

During this session, if you have an intervention specialist, they will tell every person what they must do in order to make the person come out of the denial and what their individual roles will be. If there is no intervention specialist, you will have to speak out this to the group yourself.

Preparing the Motivational Talk

Most of the alcohol intervention program in New Mexico is conducted by verbally motivating the patient to get into the treatment. Towards this end, each person has to prepare a speech that could help encourage the patient. All the members of the intervention program are requested to prepare their own speeches, speaking mostly about what benefits the patient will get if he or she pulls through the addiction. They can speak about special incentives also. Such as, the employer can speak about the possibility of improved job prospects, the teacher can speak about improvement in academic performance, the religious leader can speak about closeness to God and so on.

But the most important incentive is that which is provided by the family members. They can speak about how much they love the patient and want him or her back into a lovely sober life with them. They can speak about how the difficulty has only made their bond stronger and will become much more so when the person accepts to come out of the addiction and into a normal life.

These speeches are rehearsed because they are finally spoken out to the addicted person.

Delivering the Motivational Talk

On an appointed day, the patient is brought to the meeting and the intervention group speaks out all that they have prepared and rehearsed to the patient. This can be done in both a group format and an individual format, depending on what the occasion demands. It might take several such attempts to make the patient fully convinced to come out of the denial and accept treatment.
