Football Recipe - What Makes A Great Football Team

By Antonio da Silva

Much like cooking a great meal, forming a great football team requires certain ingredients. Talent is obviously one of them but much more than just talent is needed to form a great football team. What I mean is that the ingredients themselves are not that important, rather the amount of each ingredient which makes up the whole package.

There's no doubt that talent is something any team needs to become successful. It seems perfectly logical that being more talented than the opposing team is going to play into your hands.

That said, the implication is that a rich football club can just purchase 11 of the world's best players and sweep every league and tournament in front of them. Some clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea have attempted to do just that in recent times.

But unexpectedly, the trophies did not roll in. In fact, despite their firepower, they struggled to match their domestic rivals, in the domestic title race and did not enjoy any luck in the Champions League.

Such disappointing performance only begs the question: if talent is not the key to a dominant football team, then what is? I personally believe that the key lies in the players' egos.

The main drawback about attracting a talented group of players is the amount of egos that arrive with them. Most managers find it extremely difficult to keep everyone in check and as a result, the team suffers.

Even if such teams do win some trophies, they always tend to underachieve and the team is considered a failure. In addition, in a team with so many superstars, some players have to be benched, which creates tension and conflict in the club which is reflected in the performance of the team on the pitch.

Egos are not a wanted ingredient in a football team if it wants to be successful. The most successful teams in history were all based around a very small number of enormously talented players who led the team with purpose and conviction.

Numerous examples can be noted such as 1986 Argentinean team led by none other than Maradona while Barcelona's dominance in the last couple of years was based on the talents of Deco and Ronaldinho.

In the past season, Barcelona ruined their great form by acquiring another big ego in the form of Thierry Henry and it's no surprise that the team's performance has dipped, not to mention tensions brewing between players. Both Deco and Ronaldinho wanting out comes as no surprise.

The most dominating football teams in history are essentially built around a small number of so-called superstars. This is what all clubs and managers should be doing with their teams in order to win trophies. While it may seem strange, the fact is that the more talented the team is, the less chance it has of being coherent and victorious on the pitch.
