Visiting Newquay

Jul 31, 2008
With roots dating back to the 3rd century BC, Newquay's history is steeped in Iron Age settlements and as a lustrous fishing village. Now a major tourist destination, it's not hard to see why so many people choose Newquay.

Often regarded as one of the UK's best holiday destinations, Newquay boasts 10 long, sandy beaches which all receive a warm, sea breeze. The beaches are without a doubt one of the reasons why Newquay's population of 20,000 rockets to 100,000 throughout the summer months, along with it's famous surfing aspects, bouncing night life and child friendly atmosphere.

As the self-proclaimed 'Surfing Capital of Britain', not many would disagree. With some internationally favoured beaches and a large amount of surf shops, Newquay is established as the centre of the UK's surf industry. Whether you're a seasoned pro or have never tried surfing, Newquay is definitely the place to fulfill any surfing desire you may posses. Without dozens of surf hire shops and a renowned surfing school for beginners and improvers, you're sure to be able to be surfing within a few hours of arriving in Newquay.

Whilst surfing is a favoured, local past time, some of Newquay's beaches are home to international surfing events. Fistral beach is the most prominent and famous surfing beach, whilst Crantoc Bay, Towan and Tolcarne all provide favourable surfing locations.

Perhaps due to the major tourist factor Newquay posses, Newquay's night life is thriving. Regularly attracting world famous DJ's to it's many bars and venues, it is a favourite place for summer parties and events such as Hen and Stag parties.

Newquay can be traveled to by air, train, coach or car. Newquay Cornwall Airport provides a rapidly growing air terminal, with up to five trips daily to and from Gatwick. Newquay train station is continually being improved and expanded whilst coach services are as popular as ever.

As with many UK holiday destinations, there is something for everyone. The award winning Newquay Zoo provides both British and exotic animals for all the family to enjoy whilst Lappa Valley Steam Railway is an enjoyable yet relaxing day out for everyone. Miniature railways link various areas of this wonderful day out, including lush, green picnic areas, crazy golf and a family-friendly boating lake.

For those with a liking for the Beatles, Newquay offers a selection of destinations that were used as locations for the filming in their 'Magical Mystery Tour', including Atlantic Beach and Towan beach.

With an obvious nautical feel to the town, Newquay offers an interesting National Maritime Museum and a breathtaking Blue Reef Aquarium, situated just off the beach in one of Newquay's many coves.

Regardless of your budget, you can be sure to find an accommodation that's right for you. Newquay Hotels are in abundance, whilst there's a vast array of Bed and Breakfast's, guest houses, caravan parks, camp sites, self-catering cottages and a selection of surf lodges.

If you're looking for an accommodation that's relaxing and want to be pampered all day, Newquay offers one of the most advanced spa's in the South West of England with Fistral Spa.

When looking for something to eat, Newquay is extremely laid back. You can often take a stroll along one of the man reaches and wander straight into one of the many restaurants, sampling local, freshly caught fish or chargrilled local meats. Whilst there are many restaurants situated away fro the beach areas, before you leave Newquay, it's strongly recommended that you stray from the beach, into a beautiful restaurant and feast on a locally caught lobster over a bottle of chilled champagne.
