How Not To Learn To Play The Piano

Aug 1, 2008
Learning to play the piano can be a difficult and daunting task. Taking a different perspective by learning some of the things that won't help you play the piano may help you understand why it is so important to do those things that will help you learn. So, what is the best thing you can do to not learn to play the instrument? Take it easy.

Like any skill we master, learning to play the piano requires practice. But unlike other skills, the piano requires that we are dedicated and consistent in our practice. That means that playing the piano everyday is essential to learning the instrument. Not only does consistency matter, but the practice must be of good quality. With the piano, just consistent practice might not be enough. It may require perfect practice. The point is, in order to learn the piano you must practice, and practice right.

Even the most talented piano players in the world practice everyday, which is why they are the most talented piano players in the world. Even they will tell you that if they don't practice everyday, it shows in their performances. We become so involved in other things that practicing the piano gets put on the side. If you are serious about learning the piano, you must practice, the importance of which can't be stressed enough.

If you have a piano teacher, they will find out from you your dedication to practice. If you are not completely dedicated, they may even refuse to teach. They might even ask how high practicing is on your priority list. Most, however, will be patient with you and work with you to accomplish your goals. That brings me to the next point. Another way to not learn to play is by not establishing goals. Goals are extremely important and motivate us to do our best. By establishing realistic but stretching goals you will be able to keep track of your progress and realize your potential.

Another thing you can do to not learn the piano is be impatient. The piano is full of technique and you must consider your progress to be like climbing a ladder. You have to go through the necessary steps before you will be playing full songs. You must learn notes, scales, chords, rhythm, and piano theory before you go on to more advanced things. Being patient enough for this is essential. You can run faster than you have strength with the piano.
