Ways To Get Cheaper " High Risk " Car Insurance

Aug 1, 2008
Do you find yourself in the non-standard status with auto insurance carriers these days? Did you know that many factors effect this type of status not just getting yourself into trouble from drinking while driving, or more commonly known as a DUI?, or being involved in a few accidents? Others factors can classify you as a high risk driver that you need to be aware of. After reviewing these helpful tips I hope it helps you in obtaining more affordable auto insurance.

Like I mentioned, there are several different factors that can place someone into that "high risk" category with insurance carriers other than the two most common occurrences that we are all too aware of. Even though I've mentioned the top two reasons I 'm going to itemize all the situations that get factored in for placing you at that kind of status; and even though you may have been, there is hope of you working your way out of the dog house.

Here are the most common occurrences that lead to this:

1. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or a DUI/DWI.

2. An Inexperienced or young driver (usually the ages of 16-21).

3. Receiving multiple reckless citations.

4. Unfortunately being involved in Accidents resulting in death.

Like I've mentioned, many other factors and situations can lead you to being placed in the non-standard or high risk, category for insurance companies, but these are the main ones. Consult with your current auto insurance carrier if you need to file an SR-22 form if you've been labeled as a high risk driver. This is when your current rate will end and start with a new higher rate.

Don't make yourself crazy about this because there is hope for you in the high premium department. It's expected that your rate will increase but the question is just how much and does it have to stay that way. There are companies that work with these kinds of high risk drivers. In some states an insurance carrier has the right o drop you as a customer because of these standings.

Don't let your insurance lapse. It's better for you to have active coverage when shopping around for new coverage. That is what you need to do to compare your new given rate from your current carrier. It is possible to get a lower rate you just have to shop and compare. Here are a few tips for you to consider:

You must invest time and patience shopping around. It's best to do your own shopping and comparing other than going by what a friend's rate is because many factors come into play here such as age, driving record, or even work commute. Select a carrier that suits your needs and wallet.

Keep in mind that the flashier the car the higher the premium will be. This is because in part of the idea is, the more expensive the car is the more expensive it will be to fix or replace the car or parts for the car. If you go with an older model car that will save you on premiums because its recommend you keep liability only on it rather than physical damage coverage based on the value of the vehicle.

It's possible to get multiple discounts for specific reasons other than having a good driving record. Items for young or new drivers may qualify for a good student discount based on their grades, or if you have multiple vehicles you are insuring you can qualify for a discount. Look into combining all your insurance needs like homeowners/renters insurance, auto insurance and life insurance into one company.

I hope you find some of these tips helpful. Just remember not to get so discouraged by being categorized as a "high risk" driver. Remember that various insurance companies have different qualifications for cheaper rates so the more you investigate the better your odds are on finding a more affordable rate.
