Keeping a Journal Can Improve Your Health

Aug 1, 2008
Have you ever been stressed out? Have you ever felt the need to talk about something but never really had the chance or simply did not really feel comfortable enough to do so? There have been many studies done that show that keeping a journal can significantly improve your health. Not only that, but it can help you organize and make sense out of your thoughts as well as make you a better writer. You don't have to be an accomplished writer or an English major to keep a journal. Your journal can be anything you want it to be, whether it's a few loose leaf pages stapled together and folded a million times to be stuck in your back pocket or if it's a leather bound journal- it doesn't matter. Your journal is only for you to see and read. I love writing and find that I am best able to express my thoughts succinctly and clearly by writing it down on paper. I have kept journals/diaries for as long as I can remember, and I feel that I have greatly benefited from this. Not only does it make you a more introspective person, but I think it improves your ability to communicate your feelings more clearly and concisely.

It as once said that the pen was mightier than the sword, and it may also prove to be mightier than a drug or years of therapy. And it is certainly cheaper and less intrusive than something like a stress induced heart attack. Studies have shown that keeping a personal journal can improve your health both mentally and physically.

Having a journal or a diary is certainly not a new concept, in fact it is something that nearly everyone has either done for themselves at some point in time or knows someone who has. Writing about your inner thoughts and discussing, in whatever way, the stressful events that you encounter through out your day can help you in many ways. Not only does it give you a chance to find your own voice and to express yourself in a completely safe way without any fear of judgment but some researchers actually believe that keeping a journal on a regular basis can boost T-lymphocytes which are little immune cells. If this is the case, writing in your journal every day could help to boost your immune system.

Some studies have also shown that journaling can be useful in reducing the symptoms of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, improves your brains cognitive abilities, and can help you to reverse some of the unhealthy effects of stress by lowering blood pressure, slowing your heart rate and respiration, and decreasing anxiety.

Journaling is very easy. There are a wide variety of journals available in book store and department stores so you can find one that is just write for you. Or you can even just use a simple notebook that you would like to use for your journal. Find a nice quiet spot where you can be comfortable and starting writing your stress, and negative health, away.
