Importance Of The Detox Treatment In Utah

Aug 2, 2008
Everyone who is looking for some option on addiction treatment knows what a detox treatment is, but very few know what it exactly is about. Here are some details on the detox treatment in Utah.

How is the Detox Treatment in Utah conducted?

The main intention of the detox treatment in Utah is to provide a medical therapy to an addicted patient that can help to bring them out of the addiction. It is always conducted in an inpatient format so that the condition of the person's treatment can be monitored and changes can be applied as and when necessary during the treatment.

First, an analysis is conducted into the patient's condition to determine whether he or she will be able to go through the detox treatment or not. This is also the time when the right kind of detox approach is decided for the patient.

The patient is then made to abstain from the substance completely. This is done in an isolated inpatient center so that the abstinence of the patient can be monitored. Depending on the intensity of the person's addiction, he or she will begin feeling the withdrawal pangs. In most cases, these withdrawal pangs appear one or two days after the abstinence has begun. When the withdrawal happens, the patient has to be medicated so that its effects are lessened. This is done by providing some kind of maintenance medication to the patient.

A maintenance medication is that medication that will allay the cravings for the addictive substance in the patient as long as it is taken. Each addictive substance has its own maintenance medication, such as nicotine can be allayed with buproprion and heroin can be allayed with buprenorphine.

At the same time, the patient needs to be treated for the painful effects of the withdrawal. Painkillers and antidepressants that do not act adversely with the maintenance medication will be provided.

It depends on the nature and the type of the addiction how long the withdrawal can be. In mild cases of substance abuse, three days are quite sufficient to bring the patient out of the addiction. However, if the addiction is a strong one, then seven days might be needed. In some rare cases, like when the patient is addicted to a strongly addictive substance and also has a mental illness that impedes the treatment, the detox can go on for a very long time. However, most detox treatments are completed within a period of three weeks, however intense they might be.

Why is the Detox Treatment in Utah considered necessary?

The primary purpose of detox treatment is cleansing the body from the accumulation of toxins caused due to the intake of the addictive substance. This is quite important to prevent health complications in later life. Sometimes, people might give up on their addictions, but it might still cause a problem in them later on in life, such as alcohol can cause cirrhosis of the liver even several years after the patient has given up on the addiction. These possibilities are avoided when the toxins are removed from the body and the patient has been made purer.

However, there is another important reason too. All addictive substances follow a particular trend. As long as these substances are present in the body of the person, they will not allow the central nervous system of the person to forget the addiction. The patient will be hooked to the substance as long as even the faintest trace of it is not removed form the body. That is the reason detox is important. When the person's body has been completely cleansed from the substance, it is in a better position to come out of the addiction completely.

What happens after the Detox Treatment in Utah?

The addiction treatment program in Utah understands that the detox treatment is not the end of the treatment program. It can cleanse the body of the person but it can definitely not cleanse the mind of the person from the temptation for the substance. As long as that exists, the abuse will not stop.

Hence, after the detox treatment in Utah, the treatment center will recommend the patient to some aftercare program. This aftercare program might be present in the same treatment center or the patient might be recommended to an outside center for the treatment. The nature of the patient's withdrawal will decide what kind of aftercare he or she is suggested to participate in. Depending on that, the patient's aftercare treatment will be either an outpatient treatment program or a residential treatment program. The duration will depend on how addicted the person is to the substance.
