Improve Your Marks Exponentially with the Right Study Skills

Aug 2, 2008
The Pareto Principle states that twenty percent of the work you do and the time you spend doing it yields eighty percent of the results you obtain, whereas eighty percent of work tends to yield twenty percent of results. How do we apply this information to academic success?

Most students who study lack essential study skills. This means that most of the time, they spend a lot of wasted time preparing for exams. Instead, they could be spending 20% of the time utilising highly targeted effort.

School success does not necessarily rely on intelligence, but on knowing how to play the game. A student of average intelligence who has learned study skills is far more likely to succeed than a highly intelligent student who hasn't. When applied to academic success, the Pareto Principle is not just about effort but about focus.

Most students don't have the specific and strong focus needed while they study. In fact, only 20% of total study efforts are usually focused, which means that 80% of the time spent studying is wasted.

Of course, it is important to focus on the right material when preparing for exams. However, when overwhelmed with study material, how can a student choose what to focus on?

Australian State education departments have syllabus documents written for each subject in your course of study. Those who are most successful will focus their study on outcomes specified in the documents. Most often, these documents are available online and can be downloaded to your own computer. These will often also include glossary of terms essential to understanding and completing the course of study.

If you need help covering essential material, you can also purchase study guides specific to the state you live in for reasonable prices. These guides can save you time by providing important headings and sub-headings with summaries of essential information for exam success. These books can also fill in gaps in information that can occur as a result of absences and variations from school education standards.

Marking is based on meeting course outcomes, so successful results cannot be separated from the expectations of the curriculum. Parents often do not understand how the education system has changed since they were at school and see their children's grades as a reflection of academic ability.

More often than not, however, students don't know how to produce work necessary for successful grades. Once they know how to "play the game", they will be able to get the grades they desire. They can also save time when they study by using their time efficiently.

You can also use the Pareto Principle as part of your university study. In this case, you are given initial course documents that outline the topics you will cover in the semester's course. You may also be given initial course documents that tell you what readings and other textbooks you may have to utilise. In addition, you'll be given assignments and due dates at the beginning of your coursework, so that you can plan your study time accordingly.

Within university, most humanities courses especially require you to do a lot of reading and essay writing. This means that you need to have good summaries and good planning. If you read essay questions ahead of time and make notes from your readings that pertain to the questions, you can reduce your study time by up to 80%. In other words, you'll be giving 20% of your effort for 80% of the results. If you make a targeted effort above this percentage, you can improve your marks even more.

Focused attention for shorter periods of time is a key to academic success. However, you need to be focused on the right things. You cannot necessarily rely on what teachers say in class, or what other students tell you. You must abide by the official written material available to you. By using this as a guide, learning to write good essays, and ensuring you cover all aspects of required course content, you will be able to substantially improve your academic performance. Best of all, you will do so easily.
