Holdem is Still Number One

Aug 3, 2008
Poker is one of the most loved games in gambling today. From a simple game of stud to the illustrious game of Texas Hold'em, poker has become so popular that it warrants its own television shows. People across the country log on to their computers nightly to get their poker fix whenever they have time to play.

People might ask how the game of poker became such a beloved game throughout the nation. The fact that the people who play it could lose every cent they have ever earned makes people think it would be a deterrent. It is not, as this is the aspect of the game that makes people love it so.

Most people find the fact that it is a game of chance, where winning is almost entirely dependent upon the deck of cards, an aphrodisiac. Loss of control over their environment and security is what most professional people crave. Playing a game of chance gives these people a form of release over the control they have to have.

Another part of the control issue is the fact that poker has a special language to learn and special social skills that need to be appreciated. Knowing what hand to play and being able to bluff are nearly as important to the players of poker as the special, personal rules of the game. If a person cannot follow the social guidelines it is certain that they will not be invited back.

Even the most skilled player still relies on the order of the cards being draw in a game like poker. No matter how long they have played or how well they can read their opponents, winning still depends on the order of the cards. Unlike in blackjack where the player can control whether they receive more cards or not, poker players must make a winning hand from the cards they are dealt.

This lack of control over the outcome is not the only part of the game that is attractive. The chance to win, as in Texas Hold'em, a very large sum of money, is why so many people begin to play poker. In Texas Hold'em, the final amount of money won is the total that every player started the game with.

What usually drives people to play is that very large sum of money. The chance of winning brought the first winner of the Texas Hold'em Tournament, Chris Moneymaker in 2003, a million dollars. Many people have tried to place themselves in that same position through online competitions since then.

Dependent on how well you can play and how many people come and go from your table as you are playing is the amount won in regular poker games. You have a great chance of winning all your opponents' money if you can bluff them into thinking that your hands are better than they truly are. The chances of quite a few novices sitting at your table are greater if you can keep the same position at a table in a casino for a long time.

Another feature of the game of poker that draws people in is the companionship it brings. Many people set up private poker games with their friends just to have time together. They take turns hosting and playing the position of dealer.

Friendships are made through other forms of poker than just the private at-home games. Many of the professionals who play the Texas Hold'em competitions have become very close friends with their competitors. Playing online has also brought people from other states, countries and time zones together as friends.

Poker will last throughout the ages because of these fundamentals of the game. It has become the game it is today because of the truly attractive elements of camaraderie, money, and the sport of the game. These are the reasons people love poker.
