Easy Steps To Keep Mold From Coming Back

Aug 4, 2008
If you have treated a mold spot somewhere in your home only to have it return days or weeks later, this is because you kill the mold, but do not eliminate the reason it started to grow in the first place. Mold will always return to a place where there is adequate moisture, warmth, and food for it to sustain life. You must remove the things that are allowing it to begin growing all over again.

Mold usually occurs in kitchens and bathrooms because of moisture. Both of these rooms can become warm as well while the moisture is being put in the air. Combine the moisture and warmth with a porous surface with food value and there you have it. Let this combination linger a few day and you get mold.

Stopping the moisture accumulation is the first order of business. Getting adequate ventilation where moisture is made is the key to reducing mold risk. If you have exhaust fans in your kitchen or bathroom already and are still getting mold spots, make sure you do not need a stronger unit. If it does not pull out enough damp air fast enough for the room size, you need a replacement. If the weather permits, open a window to help eliminate moisture.

Cleaning areas in the bathroom and kitchen with disinfectants on a regular basis will also help reduce the chances of mold coming back. It also helps cut down on the numbers of germs and bacteria your family is exposed to. Drying wet surfaces after showers or bathing hurries the dry time along, it only takes a minute to do and is really helpful.

Keep paper products, leather, clothing, and other fabrics out of areas that get damp easily. These items are great food for mold. This is why basements can sometimes smell so musty. People keep items such as these in storage down there and when the moisture is present mold can ruin all these things. If you store paper and other mold prone items in the basement or attic, put them in airtight plastic containers to keep the moisture out. It will help prevent that unpleasant smell and protect your stored belongings too.

If you clean your own carpeting, be careful and do not over saturate it. When you use excess amounts of water when cleaning carpet, it takes much longer to dry and this could give mold the opportunity it needs to begin. Use no more water than is recommended per square foot and only use cleaning products specifically designed for carpet cleaning.

Make sure there are no leaks in your plumbing anywhere inside or outside the home. This can cause mold growth where you may not see it easily and can be difficult to get rid of permanently when it has taken hold in woodwork.
