What You Should Do When Your Water Pressure Gets Low

Aug 4, 2008
It is hard to imagine what it would have been like to live back in the days when people had to bring in all the water they needed for use in the home each day from a well or nearby stream outside. It had to be so tiring to do all that toting back and forth, filling up bucket after bucket of cold water that usually had to be heated if you were going to use it for bathing, washing dishes, or to clean laundry. That would be almost a full time job for one member of a working household.

For years now since indoor plumbing has become a convenience in the home, we often take it for granted. We do not really think about our water supply in the home unless we have some problem develop with it. Just let the water company cut off the supply for a day or even a few hours and it can throw our home routine all out of whack. What would we do without our hot showers and baths everyday or the many water using appliances we are accustomed to having like our washing machine, dishwasher, hot tub, or ice making refrigerators?

We can even get ruffled when our water pressure gets interrupted. We expect that steady stream of water coming out of the showerhead when we are bathing or need to flush the toilet. There are a couple of different reasons why we can lose water pressure. When we notice a change in the speed and amount of water that is coming out of our faucets, there could be a problem that needs investigating.

One reason the water pressure might be reduced in a single faucet is if there is built up residue inside the faucet itself. This can be caused from rust, lime scale, or other minerals elements you might have in your water supply. Usually this is not that difficult to resolve. One of the most common places to get this kind of deposits, but not the only one, is the showerhead in your bathroom. There are cleaners you can purchase that you can soak or scrub the shower head in. You screw the shower head off and use the product to remove the build up. Use the same procedure for sink faucets as well. Usually the screen inside will be clogged.

Another more serious reason water pressure can drop might be due to a leak in the supply line that can cause the decrease. If you have lost pressure all over the house, this could be the problem. If you search all the water supply lines inside and outside and do not find any leaks or ruptures, then you might need to call the water department and see if the problem is with their lines. If you have a well on your property, it could be your pump causing the problem.
