Common Yet Interesting Angular Cheilitis Q&A

There are so many things about angular cheilitis that people don't know but should be aware of. Below are some simple questions and answers that are designed to help individuals understand the basics of angular cheilitis.

1- What is angular cheilitis?

a.It is inflammation at the corners of the mouth accompanied by cracking, rashes, and dry spots around the lips. It is very painful and may also cause bleeding from the cracked lips and extreme discomfort.

2- What causes angular cheilitis?

a.The exact reason is unknown but some sources have some pretty good guesses. Some say it is from iron or vitamin deficiencies, such as with anemia. Others say that it is caused by ill fitting dentures. And a few believe that is caused by sexual transmitted diseases such as aids. Although none or all of these reasons may be right one thing is for sure, the condition is caused by fungus.

3- Who is most likely to get angular cheilitis?

a.The first perhaps most susceptible group are those who lick there lips, this is a sure fire way to get angular cheilitis because it is one of the biggest proponents to the contition. The second group are the elderly not because of their age but because they are more likely to lose their teeth and need dentures. If dentures don't fit properly then there tends to be more saliva around the lips. And thirdly those with any sort or eating disorder, anemia, or diabetes are highly likely because their body is already struggling to get he vitamins and iron it needs.

4- How do you recognize angular cheilitis?

a.The symptoms are easily recognized cause they are so noticeable both by sight and the pain the cause. Things to watch for though are cracks around the mouth, very dry lips, bleeding when the mouth is opened wide and splitting at the corners of the mouth.

All in all if there is anything wrong with your mouth and particularly if pain is associated with it you should treat it immediately. The signs start as simple as dry lips which can be treated with simple lip balm or a change in diet but if you let them progress the condition will worsen. Once the symptoms worsen they can still be treated but it will take longer to heal and longer for the pain to cease.
