Gardening May Become the Survival Hobby

Aug 4, 2008
Gardening is probably a hobby that is enjoyed by more people than all other hobbies combined. Gardening is usually done right at home so it is convenient, involves physical exercise, and when you are working tends to keep people away. Gardening is not always easy as a lot of physical work is required. Gardening is closely related to the art and science of horticulture, a branch of agriculture specializing in growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Gardening involves moderate to sometimes strenuous exercise that incorporates many important elements of accepted exercise regimes, such as stretching and stance, repetition and movement, and even resistance principles similar to weight training, while expending calories. Gardening provides an adequate and challenging workout, but is not as stressful to the body as other exercise options, such as jogging or aerobics.

Gardening is also a great medium to practice one's creativity, through simple yet fulfilling activities like garden layout, and flower and vegetable arrangements. Gardening is a good way to spend your time as it is very satisfying to grow your own vegetables, fruits, and flowers. In the USA we can garden in suburbia and in small urban plots of land as long as there is water to pump and electricity to pump it.

Gardening is related to farming. However, farming is done on a much larger scale. Gardening provides pleasure for both the gardener and for the chef who will prepare the fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, if your space for gardening is limited a window box is a simple and convenient way to maintain a miniature garden.

Gardening is often a solitary pleasure, enhanced at times by back fence conversations with your neighbors. These days some gardeners use the Internet to extend their conversations and share their knowledge and their gardening pleasures. Gardening is often considered to be a rather dainty activity but actually there is a lot of physical activity going on. Not only in pulling those irksome weeds, but pushing a mower, toting supplies, digging holes, turning compost, and much more.

Gardening is likely to be undertaken regularly, which makes it a great exercise, carries a low risk of injury, and your exposure to a modest amount of sunlight boosts vitamin D production which may help calcium absorption.

Gardening can be effectively scaled up to feed entire villages of over 100 people from specialized plots. A variant is the community garden which offers plots to urban dwellers. Some futurists are now forecasting that gardening will become necessary for more people to take part in as society as we know it today breaks down in an age of high energy costs and of food shortages. An increasing percentage of the world's population may once again have to learn to be largely self sufficient in food production.

If food production is not a priority, growing roses can be one of the most rewarding gardening experiences. Once harvested the rose scent will fill a room and their beauty is legendary. Growing an indoor garden eco friendly with natural plant food helps reduce the need for toxic chemicals and keeps your family healthy. Natural organic plant food can restore healthy soil, improve seed germination, stimulate root growth, and reduce the need for synthetic chemicals.

In urban areas guerrilla gardeners identify pieces of land (such as abandoned lots, drainage ditches, neglected planters, patches of grass along buildings, etc) and reclaim those spaces for the community and the environment by planting gardens (often illegally) in them. It is a form of non-violent direct action aimed at transforming society. Guerrilla gardening is a powerful reaction to the wasteful use of land, such as vacant lots and sidewalk parkways. You can probably turn a parkway in front of your home into a vegetable garden without any trouble as long as you share a little of your garden produce with your neighbors.

With inflation on the comeback trail, especially at the supermarket, in the near future gardening will likely become more popular and perhaps even more necessary than ever before. In any event, it's hard to beat gardening's combination of healthy exercise along with tasty and healthy products that you will enjoy eating.

Actually, in the not too distant future of ever higher energy costs and food shortages if you want to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables you will probably have to learn how to grow them yourself.

Being a gardener has it's advantages and in the future may greatly increase your chances of survival.
