Explaining Computer Memory For The Forgetful

Aug 4, 2008
RAM, an acronym that means Random Access Memory, is the most well known type of memory. Even school children are familiar with these initials. RAM is a volatile or temporary memory form that's comparable to our own short term memory capabilities. The information is there and being retrieved by our memory when necessary, but gone when it becomes unnecessary for the computer to access it to complete a command from the user.

At times volatile memory is referred to as dynamic since it can change and be changed. Non-volatile forms are sometimes called static memories. This form of memory can be stored and is constant rather than short term. Just as human beings possess both long and short term memories, computers possess both types as well. Basically, the computer and its memory are built in a manner that resembles the brains of human beings.

There are several types of memory for both non-volatile and volatile forms. Other types include: RAM (both dynamic and static), flash, ROM, cache, virtual, video, BIOS, and memory sticks. Each form has specific purposes. Not all computers have all forms. That's what makes each computer's performance unique. Likewise, our brains are what make each individual unique and distinct.

Computer memory is not restricted to laptops and desktops. The memory types usually associated with computers are also found in numerous electronic devices that we use on a daily basis. Not all memory types are utilized in all electronic gadgets, but nevertheless the individual forms are located in them. Some examples of these devices include radios, PDAs (Personal Data Assistants), and cellular phones. TVs and VCRs utilize computer memory as well.

The most well known electronic device for children that utilizes computer memory is the game consoles in today's popular systems. Although adults also enjoy playing these games, teenagers and children know them best. What most kids do not know is that due to the ability of its computer memory, the game "remembers" the ending point from a previous game session. Without this ability, the console would not even recall what game to play!

Computer memory is the ability of a computerized instrument to remember or run an application that makes it operate the way we expect it to when it's turned on. Computer memory is distinct from electricity, which is a current that essentially wakes up the electronic, computerized device. Computer memory brings these devices to life-or as close to life as technology can get.
