Adult Asthma: Adjusting Can Be Difficult

Aug 17, 2007
You probably already know that asthma is a disease where your precious airways get constricted and start to shut off airflow. This of course makes breathing very difficult and uncomfortable. Asthma can be somewhat mild to very serious, especially if you do not watch it and take the proper precautionary measures. Most of the time asthma is developed in childhood and if it is taken care of well at that time, it is easier to take care of when you're an adult. If you are diagnosed as an adult adjusting can be difficult

A reason you may be one of the more rare cases that are diagnosed with asthma as an adult could be due to certain allergies. Now you must take precautions you never had to worry about before, and won't be used to it like you would be if you had it as a child. Now as an old dog you have to learn a new trick and it may not be easy or comfortable. You don't want to be seriously affected by your asthma and if you aren't careful, it could risk your very life.

Work With Your Doctor

If you suspect asthma and haven't seen a doctor yet, you really need to start here. He or she will be able to let you know what kind of asthma you have after some tests and evaulations. They'll be able to tell you if there is anything you need to do or stop doing. It could be as simple as a sensitivity to a certain pollen and you would just need to avoid it. There are also very effective medicines, like inhalers, that can be prescribed.

Don't feel down, your productive life doesn't have to end with asthma. Even though adult asthma can be serious, can threaten your life, and can take some getting used to, learning and a steady effort can keep it from taking control.

Remember that even if you are diagnosed with adult asthma you can have a very long and regular life. You will probably just have to make a little change here and there. You'll get used to keeping from those things that aggravate your asthma, just listen to your doctor. If you are told to take medicine, take it. If you are given an inhaler, be sure to have it with you at all times. If your asthma is more serious an inhaler can save your life. After a time you can put your adult asthma to the back burner of your mind so you can contol it, and keep it from controlling you.
