More Adults in College than Ever Before; Why?

By Daniel Z. Kane
Aug 5, 2008
Today there are more working adults enrolled in college degree programs than ever before.

There are several reasons for this trend. One is that online education offers adults the opportunity to continue their education without neglecting their career or other obligations.

The greatly increased availabilty of financial aid is another major reason for the increased number of working adults in college.

The perceived value of online education has also been important in the growth of adult enrollment in degree programs. Once regarded with considerable skepticism, online degrees are today regarded by many as being the full equivalent of traditional educational programs.

CLEP...the College Life Experience Program has also been an important factor in getting adults back to school. And, why not? Experience-based credits reduce the cost of earning a degree and may also reduce the time required by a full year.

And, it's not just online colleges that are enrolling more adults. Traditional colleges are growing by making it possible for working adults to earn a degree by attending evening and/or weekend classes.

All the afforementioned factors have helped lead to unparalleled growth in on-campus and online adult education. The single most important reason for the record number of adults now seeking a college or undergraduate degree, however, is the increased realization by working adults that continuing their educations will substantially improve their career options and earning potential.

If you are not already doing so, you might want to start seriously thinking of earning your next degree. While it does require commitment and work, it has never been more convenient or more affordable. And degrees have never been more valuable.
