An Exercise Pill? You've Got to Be Kidding!

Aug 6, 2008
Are you one of the millions who love to eat and hate to exercise? If so, there's good news coming out of research laboratories! Scientists are actually testing a new exercise pill that has the potential to not only make us resistant to weight gain, but also give us the same health benefits that trained athletes earn.

It seems impossible, but these amazing results aren't something out of a science fiction movie. They're actually happening in laboratories today. Right now, only mice are benefiting from this amazing study, but who knows, one day we could be fit without expending any effort!

Two different drugs were used in this experiment, AICAR and GW1516. Dr. Ronald Evans, a molecular physiologist with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and professor at Salk Institute's Gene Expression Laboratory recently released his preliminary results.

Exercise-trained mice demonstrated an increase of 65% in running time and running distance, when administered GW1516. This drug is also being used in a study to enhance HDL levels which would provide humans with greater levels of good cholesterol.

Sedentary mice received the drug AICAR. These are the mice most closely linked to human "couch potatoes." When they were given this drug, their running time improved by 23% and their running distance improved by 44%! What makes these results even more impressive is the lazy mice improved in both muscle tone and endurance, without ever performing any activity!

Amazingly, the physical composition of the muscles was actually changed as a result of AICAR. Muscles that previously were categorized as "sugar-burning fast-twitch fibers" morphed into "fat-burning slow-twitched fibers." What does that mean to those of us who aren't scientists? The muscles of the mice given AICAR showed the same benefits that occur in athletes trained as cyclists and distance runners!

Of course, those of us who don't like to exercise will be interested in this news, but doctors are most excited about the possible benefits to people who have the desire, but are unable to exercise. Long hospital stays, joint pain, and other circumstances keep many people from being active.

This exciting new "exercise pill" has a fat-burning ability that could potentially aid in weight loss In addition, it could decrease adipose tissue, lower blood sugar levels, lessen resistance to insulin, decrease the risk of diabetes, lessen muscle wasting, and decrease the risk of heart disease.

While this research has many wonderful benefits, Dr. Evans is quick to point out one potentially negative aspect. These drugs may prove to be irresistible to some professional athletes looking for an edge. Because of this, detection tests are already being developed for use by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

So, the first question is, will these amazing drugs work on humans too? Secondly, how long before we have to wait for distribution? Those answers aren't available yet, but thousands of us will be anxiously waiting.
