Tips for Packing Up Your Household

Aug 8, 2008
The method you use in packing will make it easier for you to find your items when you finish moving, and there will be less breakage and better organization. Many people want to pack their own items, but this can be time consuming depending on how much stuff they own. Packing can take several weeks, so be sure to set aside enough time.

The first thing to do is to make an inventory of your possessions and decide what you are keeping and what you are throwing out. Put things that you will not need into storage or in the garbage. In order to pack your possessions, you will need packing supplies. The packing supplies consist of boxes, packing tape, and bags. You will need bubble wrap and wrapping paper to protect the items, and labels or markers to identify the boxes. Other packing supplies can also be obtained. Keep items that are more of a priority separate, so they will be easily accessible. You can purchase most of the items you will need for packing at your local general store or supermarket. You should start obtaining boxes from friends and relatives; grocery stores often have them as well.

Start by packing items that you don't use daily. The benefit of doing this is that you will get a huge head start on your packing. The things you pack last should be the things you use daily. After a box is packed, be sure to label the top of the box with a list of the contents. Another simple method is to just label the box with its destination such as kitchen, living room, or bedroom.

The boxes in which you pack your breakable items should be labeled "fragile". Fragile objects should be covered in bubble wrap or newsprint so that they remain intact while being moved. Cut costs by wrapping up your breakable items in clothing. Just remember to carefully unroll them when the time comes to unpack them. Be sure to seal your boxes with packing tape so that they don't break open in transit. Oddly shaped items that can't be easily packed in a box should be moved separately; these things may include brooms, mops, or lamps.

In order to be moved, some furniture may have to be disassembled. Keep the parts organized and labeled if necessary, as this will make putting the item back together again a lot easier. Wrap furniture legs to protect them from being scratched when you move. To keep table tops from getting scratched or damaged, wrap them with a blanket, thick cloth, or other protective material. You will want to protect your home furnishings from damages during the moving process. Take your time and use caution when moving your possessions.
