Pretending Feeds the Imagination

Aug 8, 2008
There is much to be learned from children at play. The freedom of joyful expression is evident in the many games of make believe and hide and seek. The values that are derived from using the imagination during play are truly limitless. Pretend play can involve many facets and toys. Children are vastly different when it comes to what they find to be entertaining. By making use of their creative gifts, they are growing and evolving right before your eyes.

The most important part of kids playing pretend is the way it benefits their brain on all levels. They are thinking and creating which in turn exercises the imagination. This type of exercise one can never have too much of. It's common to see kids automatically launch into games of pretend where they tend to invent their own worlds and rules. It's natural to them and should always be an encouraged form of play. Allow them to go all out by building castles out of cardboard or model cars from scratch. The wonderful thing about imagination is that it can often be manifested physically with much success.

Pretend play has a valuable way of teaching children through action that there are no boundaries when it comes to creative thought. Anything that can be imagined can be brought to life. Books and movies are physical evidence of how simply profound that can actually be. Limits do not exist in the world of pretend. Adults tend to lose sight of this fact over time which children need to be a reminder of.

The gift of creativity and the use of an active imagination are certainly not useful only to children. There are a great many professions that are built entirely on creativity. Advertising for example is just one area of business where the idea sells the product. It all comes down to imagination. This stems from the childhood pretend play that kids are known for enjoying. It can very easily wash over into adult life where a job or other important role may call for it.

One special attribute that goes with imagination is that it is just as fun for one as it is for an entire group. Whether shared or solo, there is nothing to stop creativity from flowing. Perhaps this is why a child with an interesting toy can often stay amused with little to no outside assistance all on their own.

Self expression is absolutely necessary. To gaze upon various works of art, books or plays very clearly indicates how different we all are. For this reason the imagination sets us apart through the things that we create and showcase to the world. To hinder this form of growth and exercise would most likely have very negative results. Children should be allowed the freedom to enjoy their playtime while experiencing the growth of an active imagination. Parents can do plenty to aid in this kind of creativity. Get involved with kids and learn about the worlds that they are creating. It can be a continued learning experience for adults as well.
