Saving Money on Gas

Aug 10, 2008
The economic 'headwinds' that have hit the US economy has greatly affected gas prices. And saving money on gas is a concern for quite a number of motorists. There are many ways to save money on gas, getting better price deals, using the car less and improving car's fuel efficiency, to mention a few. The most popular and widely practiced way of saving money on gas is by using gas credit cards. When this type of card is used to purchase gas, you benefit from a rebate, usually from 2% to 5%. This is only a small percentage but when applied to a larger sum and is accumulated, would result to a considerable amount.

However, this savings technique would not be effective when you do not know how to lessen your car's gas consumption or improve its fuel efficiency. While the above tip works, driving habits can be a big factor in gas money savings. Below are some of the driving habits that should be adhered to save money on gas.

Drive below the speed limit

The government's research shows that driving below the speed limit of 60 mph reduces your engine's gas consumption. Specifically, your engine eats more gas, at a cost of about $ .20 per gallon more, for every 5 mph above the 60 mph limit.

Drive less aggressively

Aggressive driving-hard breaking and quick accelerating, reduces the engine's fuel efficiency and therefore requires more gas. Driving less aggressively, easing up on the gas and breaks, not only saves gas but saves you from accidents as well.

Reduce Idle Time

Car idle periods eat a lot of gas even though the car is not rolling. Avoid too much idle time; learn to discern when to turn off the car and when to wait. If waiting would be more than five minutes, then turning off the engine would be a more sensible thing to do.

Use overdrive gears

Make use of the functional tools that your car has. One of these is the overdrive gears which reduces the speed of the engine. If your car does not have this tool, then just simply match your speed to the gear you are driving on. Don't step on the gas too much. If you're on a low gear, this would make your engine scream from the hard work and require a lot of gas.

Use you're A/C only when needed

Your car's air conditioning unit definitely eats up gas, contrary to what many believe. So, use your car's A/C only when necessary. This may only save you a few pennies but still a form of savings.

Inflate your tires to the proper level

Tires that are not inflated to the proper level make the car harder to roll and consequently require the engine to work harder and eat a lot of gas. Always check your car tires' pressure level to help your car run smoothly.

Saving gas does not only rely on getting the best price deals but on how you drive, take care of your car and your car's engine as well. A well maintained car and engine will result to a higher engine performance and savings on gas money.
