Tips To Proper Pomeranian Grooming

Aug 10, 2008
It is important that you give your Pomeranian a bath before you start a Pomeranian hair cut. It is very important that you don't allow water to get in the eyes, nose or ears. To protect the ears from water you can place cotton balls in them.

Once the bath is complete you can towel dry before blow drying. Use a soft slicker brush while blow drying and brush in the direction of the head. You don't have to buy a blow dryer specifically for dogs as long as you use a human hair dryer on the low heat setting otherwise you can dry out the hair and aggravate the skin.

Then when it comes time to do the Pomeranian hair cut you want to start with the head and specifically the ear tips. This can be hard since you don't want to cut the actual ear. The best way to prevent this is by pinching the ear leather between your fingers so they act as a protective barrier.

Cut at a horizontal angle when trimming the tips of the ears, to do this make sure your scissors are parallel to the dogs eyes while you are cutting. On your second cut make a slightly tilted angle. This will provide the ears with a softer angle that keeps the ears from looking too pointy. Next you should brush the hair around the head towards the front of the dog. Cut away any excess hair you see in order to give a circular shape when viewed from the front.

When doing a Pomeranian hair cut it is a good idea to have your fingers as guides just in case the Pomeranian decides to suddenly leap forward. The next step is to brush all the chest hair up and trim it at an angle that points towards the knee to give the dog a tidy appearance. This also provides the Pomeranian with a standard circular appearance when looked at from the side.

Now you should focus on the body. While viewing the dog from the side you should trim the hair underneath in a semi-circular shape. Start about one third up the back of the front leg and then continue the semi-circular Pomeranian hair cut until you end about one third of the way up the back leg.

Finally you should trim some of the hair around the base of the tail to give a tidy shape. Then you should twist the end of the tail and hold it straight up the back. Now cut the length where you think it will lay best.

The last part of a Pomeranian hair cut is to trim the hair on the feet that gives the dog a rabbit foot look. You also need to trim hairs underneath the feet. Placing your dog on their back is the best way to control both the dog and the scissors.
