What Does The Aftercare In The Alcohol Treatment Program In Hawaii Contain?

Aug 10, 2008
Every expert on alcohol treatment maintains that the aftercare that follows the detox treatment is more important than the actual detoxification process itself. This point of view is very staunchly held by the alcohol treatment program in Hawaii. When a person is detoxified, it is only the body of the person that is cleansed. What is actually done is that the accumulated toxins are removed. These toxins could have gathered over the years of their alcohol abuse. It becomes very important to remove these toxins without which the person will not be able to overcome the pangs for the substance and will always carry the risk of some or the other health complication.

Necessary though the detoxification process is, the aftercare is much more important. This is the part of the treatment where the person's mind is conditioned in a way so as to work out the temptation for the substance. The person is taught various methods that can help keep the cravings away. This is what actually brings the person to a more sustainable method of addiction treatment. While the detox treatment can cleanse the body of the person, it is the aftercare that actually teaches the person how to completely stay away from the substance.

The nature of the aftercare is actually decided during the progress of the alcohol treatment program in Hawaii itself. The decision pegs on how well the patient took in the withdrawal process during the detox. If the withdrawal process was not quite so intense, then the patient will do well with an outpatient program for the aftercare. However, if the person faced a very strong withdrawal, then that indicates the patient has been with a very strong addiction or that the mental situation of the patient is not all that healthy. In either case, the patient will need to go through a residential treatment program for the aftercare.

There are different ways in which the aftercare is carried out in different centers that have an alcohol treatment program in Hawaii. Though the main intention is the same, which is to bring the patient towards a more sustainable recovery, the implementation of the program could be vastly different from one treatment center to another. However, the following are some basic trends that all the programs will follow:-

1. The first phase of the aftercare program is to decide upon the right form of maintenance medication to be provided to the patient. This is the medication that will help the patient to keep out from any kind of cravings for the substance. As long as the patient consumes the maintenance medication, there will be very diminishes urges for the substance and they even may be completely absent. Thus, planning out a maintenance medication becomes important. It is also significant because each type of addiction will respond only to a specific kind of medication

2. The program must also include counseling. Counseling is needed because in most people with an alcohol addiction in Hawaii it is seen that the main factor keeping them in the addiction is some kind of emotional problem. Like, people may be consuming alcohol to combat their depression or their work stress. These are definitely unhealthy trends. People are taught how they must not let their emotional problems not have a bearing on their propensity to consume alcohol. They are counseled to work out their emotional issues, which can go a long way in helping them overcome their addiction itself.

3. Therapies work towards the same end too. Patients are involved in certain useful therapies such as Yoga, massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, etc. These are holistic methods that can help the patient unwind completely and cope with the stress that affects his or her life. Even by themselves, these therapies are quite good in helping people overcome the urges for the substance. Patients are taught how they can employ some quick fix therapies that can remove the temptation for the substance completely. Both holistic and conventional therapies are taught to the patients.

4. Family participation is also an absolute must. When the patients go back to their own homes after an alcohol treatment program in Hawaii, the family is trained to look after certain indications that might mean they are getting back into the addiction. They are trained on proper behavior that will not trigger strong emotions in the patient that could induce them to get back to the bottle. They are also trained how they can cope with the situation themselves so that they do not develop any emotional problems while dealing with the addiction treatment.
