Used Cars: Buying a Clunker

Aug 10, 2008
Looking to save a bundle on transportation? Try buying a clunker. That's right, I'm talk about one of those super beat up, underpowered, ugly little cars that somehow manages to keep running into today.

Why would you do this to yourself? Well, because of their extremely low prices and low insurance costs, you can buy a clunker and save yourself thousands of dollars that you can use to buy things that are more important to you.

Of course, you can't just grab $2000 dollars and buy the first you find with that amount. No, you need to do some basic research, and see what kinds of cars are holding up for the long haul. I myself am a big fan of Hondas (Civics and Accord) as well as Toyota Corollas, but there are many other ultra durable vehicles out there, if you know where to look.

Once you have car in mind, it's time to hit the listings and see what you can find. If you've done your homework, you should be able to spot the best deals pretty quickly, and put them o your short list.

Now, this is really important when you're looking for a clunker. When you visit and test drive, you really need to be on the lookout for problems. Look for spots under the car that might indicate leaking fluids. Listen for any odd noises, and attempt to determine where they come from. Don't let anything that's even slightly suspicious slide.

Make you you get a chance to look under the hood. And, look for leakage, and listen for odd noises. Ask for maintenance records, and make sure that at critical maintenance (i.e., timing belt) has taken place. Don't let any little thing slide.

If you are careful to scrutinize the car before buying, you should have an idea of whether it has been well cared for or not. If you like what you see, and the price is right, go ahead and buy. Otherwise, don't be afraid to walk, as these types of cars are hardly rare and exotic. You can always go elsewhere and find yourself a deal.

So, I hope this gives you some insight into how you can about buying a money saving clunker that will serve you well for years to come. I've been driving my clunker for the past 5 years, and it has been saving me tons of money ever since. It may not be glamorous, but I get a good feeling knowing that my money is now free to be spent on the more important things in life. Buy a clunker, and you'll get to experience this feeling too.
