Picking Out the Perfect Swim Suit

Aug 11, 2008
Whether you enjoy leisurely or competitive swimming, the swimsuit you choose should facilitate the activities that you'll be doing.

For example, bikinis are not a very practical type of swimsuit. Because of their design, they have more of a tendency to slip off the wearer during use than modest styles like one piece suits, tankinis and skirt bottoms. If you still prefer to walk down the beach in as little clothing as possible, I don't see the point of spending money on a bikini when you can just wear your underwear instead.

The Tankini is one step up from the bikini in both modesty and functionality. In addition to shielding more of your body from observers, a tankini also provides more protection from the sun. At the same time, the two-piece construction still facilitates easy outfit changes and more convenient restroom stops. With two piece suits, you can also mix and match different parts of your swimsuits with each other.

Unfortunately there are still some modesty risks with tankinis. Although tankinis do stay on your body better than bikinis, high-speed water activities like tubing, water skiing and diving can produce enough momentum to peel those swimsuits bottoms off your hips as easily as a bikini. To avoid the embarrassing situations that those events create, the safest apparel you can buy is a modest one-piece swimsuit.

One-piece suits offer several benefits that two-piece models lack. For example, they have more ability to smooth out love handles or other flabby parts of your body, they are more aerodynamic, and it is very difficult to lose them while you're in the water. They are also the most modest swimsuit you can buy. If you want to cover even more of your skin, a swim skirt provide a little more protection and add a sassy style to your suits. Skirts can also cover an unsightly bikini like or the reddish scrape of razor burn. Dressed in a modest swimsuit, you can play in the sun, sand and water without making constant adjustments or worrying about showing too much.

If your weight doesn't change very much from year to year, you can shop for the swimsuits you prefer at the end of the summer and take advantage of the low-season sales. A lot of stores don't stock many swimsuits in the winter though so the sales window can be rather short. If you do need to buy a swimsuit during the winter months, there are plenty of online store that would be happy to fill your order. The drawbacks to online orders include waiting and paying for shipping.
