Some Family Issues That Impede Addiction Treatment In Kentucky

Aug 11, 2008
It may sound quite strange but there are certain issues that are proving to be a stumbling block to the addiction treatment in Kentucky, which originate in the family of the patient itself. This is strange because the family, which is supposed to be the major pillar of support for the addiction treatment of the person, can sometimes prove to be a huge liability and pose difficulties in the treatment process. Here we take a look at some of these family-related problems that can make addiction treatment in Kentucky tough.

Ignorance

Most families in Kentucky are still quite ignorant of what an addiction is and even if they know, there is always the tendency to think that things like addictions always happen to other people. This complacency, however, is posing an important threat to addiction recovery in Kentucky.

Right from the school level to the workplace level, there are centers that provide education to families on how they must understand the signs and symptoms of an addiction and seek proper remedies at the right time. In schools, whenever a student is suspected to be in an addiction by the teachers or school substance counselors, the parents are immediately intimated of it and they are also explained what options for treatment can be used. The same is used when people in the workplace are found to be with addictions. However, such treatment processes are rarely initiated by the families themselves.

That is the reason the addiction treatment authorities in Kentucky have launched various awareness programs that are being advertised widely through all kinds of media. The main intention is to make families aware that addictions can happen in their own homes and what they can do when such a situation occurs.

Codependency

Family codependency in relation with addiction treatment in Kentucky has become a very serious issue in the last few years. Codependency occurs when an outside party keeps an addict away from getting into treatment. It might seem odd that a family can be responsible for such an activity, but it does happen. Take a look at this example.

If there is a young man addicted to alcoholism, the family will probably keep the habit under wraps as long as they can afford to do that. They might not let other people come to know of his addiction and may even cover up for some minor offenses that the person commits due to his addiction. By doing this, the family may feel that they are doing their duty as a family and are actually expressing their love to the person in question, but what they are really doing is that they are pushing the person further into the addiction. With this kind of behavior, the person will assume that his family is accordant with his condition and he might even become unabashed about his addiction.

Even if such people are put into a treatment program, giving them complete recovery becomes very difficult unless and until the families are trained on what the right approach towards the whole issue of addiction should be. Till a family counseling program is not conducted to make the family understand what they must actually do when someone among them is into an addiction, codependency will continue to be a serious deterrent to the addiction treatment program in Kentucky.

Emotional Problems

There are several family members of addicted persons who develop strong emotional reactions of their own. These people are usually closely related to the addict and therefore feel quite strongly about the person's addiction. Some of the issues that can happen are depression, anxiety, panic, stress and various other such problems that can take a toll on their own mental health.

There are two aspects to this problem. Firstly, if the families develop such conditions of their own, it is very difficult to carry out a complete recovery process. Most treatment centers rely on the families to monitor the progress of the patient's addiction recovery during the aftercare, which they will not be able to do if they have emotional problems of their own. Secondly, if the family members develop problems of their own, they would themselves need treatment and that could make it much more harrowing for the other members of the family.

That is the reason most treatment programs in Kentucky include a family counseling program. This is held in most centers for a period of three days. During this counseling program, families are trained on what their approach must be towards the treatment program and how they can prove to be constructive.
