What Does Reverse Osmosis Do?

Aug 12, 2008
What is reverse osmosis - this occurs when water is forced though a membrane that is partially penetrable. This changes it from a liquid containing undesirable elements to one that in which nothing remains but the liquid. More commonly, water is the liquid that is changed by reverse osmosis. The procedure removes solids, organics, bacteria, and other elements that you do not want in your water source.

This process uses a membrane to force the water through that has tiny holes that are so small they cannot be seen without the aid of a microscope. An electrical charge is also used to in some instances to keep certain chemicals from coming through with the water.

Where Is Reverse Osmosis Used?

The beverage industry is one place that uses reverse osmosis. Their manufacture of colas and other drinks for consumers is an example of the needed process of osmosis to ensure the best water is used in making these products. Next time you pick up a Pepsi consider the process that was used to make the drink that you have purchased and multiply that times millions.

The health care industry is an example of a place where the water that is used has to be absolutely free of any kinds of contaminants that could harm people. The hospitals and nursing homes that use water that has gone through the reverse osmosis procedure and had any and all bacteria, contaminants, and harmful elements removed. This is one instance where it could be lethal if contaminated water were consumed or used.

No one ever considers that the oil and gas companies have to figure out how to deal with water in everyday development of their product. For every barrel of oil that is contained, several barrels of water are contaminated and need to be treated for reuse. The water can be used in agriculture or other methods of cooling such as cooling towers after it is treated and had the concentration of foreign properties removed. Once again this is where reverse osmosis comes in to the picture.

Did you ever consider the use of water in our everyday life? There are uses for water that probably no one knows about. Paper mills use water in their cooling towers and boilers. When the water is put through the reverse osmosis procedure so that it can be safely used at paper mills to keep things running smoothly while the paper is going through.

For manufacturing plants, no matter what the product is, they will need water. Sometimes it is used in the process of making the product. Sometimes the water is needed for employees. Regardless of the need for the water, many plants have a reverse osmosis system for treating the water so that it will be the purest available for drinking or use in their product.

In conclusion, water that has not been treated can be very dangerous. We have learned that lesson in the past. Dirty water was the cause behind many of the diseases that have wiped out whole cities. Therefore, the alternative, having a reverse osmosis system in place, makes for a safer water supply for drinking, cooking, and bathing purposes.
