The History of Notebook Computers: A Breakthrough In The World of Technology

Aug 12, 2008
The world has seen many breakthroughs in technology and one of them is the history of notebook computers.

Notebook, laptop, call it what you may, these two words are synonymous with each other. The introduction of notebooks has shaken the world with its features and functionality. It is basically a portable computer with all the functions and features of a regular desktop computer compacted and developed to allow mobility.

Significant Dates In The History Of Notebook Computers

* In 1981, the very first notebook computer was introduced. The first notebook computers were classified as high profile gadgets due to the high cost of acquiring one.

* In 1983, IBM and Epson developed portable versions of the laptop in the market. Different models of the laptop emerged during this time, but the costs are still high that only the rich and professional businessmen can afford to buy them during that time.

* In 1995, Windows introduced the Windows 95 operating system that brought about the huge buzz in notebook computers. Windows 95 was the break that the masses are looking for. With its advanced features and the new operating system, the notebook computer was a sleeker and more compact version of the typical desktop computer. The price of notebooks dropped as more and more people wanted to buy one.

* One of the significant improvements in the history of notebook computers is the introduction of non-lead-acid batteries. Today's notebooks come with lithium ion batteries that are more energy efficient.

* Power-saving notebooks have processors that allow data storage at a max. The new design and engineering structure of notebook processors made it possible to process as much data.

* Also sometime during the 90's, liquid crystal displays or LCD monitors were developed to provide sharper and crisper images.

* Thinner and more reliable hard disk drives were developed also in the 90's. The 3.5" HDD and 2.5" HDD were developed to accommodate the ever-so-shrinking notebook computer. Nowadays we also have the flash or thumb drive if there's a need for more data storage.

* Later in the 90's, IBM-PC notebooks have built-in internal modems, standard and parallel ports. As early as 1997 to 1999, USB and WiFi were developed. Some notebooks even had built-in wireless broadband modem.

* Later improvements include the video camera and finger sensor features.

Perhaps it's safe to say that the history of notebook computers is an on-going process as there are still developments being made to improve its features and function. And because of the convenience and mobility of notebook computers, plus the added high-tech features and affordability, many people are expected to use it in the future.
