Actions You Can Take To Help Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

Aug 13, 2008
While bladder infections aren't normally too critical if they're treated the correct way and swiftly, they are still annoying and disruptive to your day-to-day life. Fortunately you have some easy actions you can take each day to prevent recurring UTI's from continuously infecting you. First it is imperative that you perceive the reasons behind the bladder infections and the symptoms that come with them. After that we can talk about what you need to do that can help stop bacteria growth in the urinary tract.

What causes a UTI?

On occasions you should hear people call a bladder infection a urinary tract infection. The urinary tract is constructed of a few parts, beginning at the kidneys, which leads to the bladder, which leads to the urethra where urine exits the body. Therefore the phrases bladder infection and urinary tract infection are commonly used interchangeably. Bacteria multiplying inside the urinary tract cause all urinary tract infections. The E coli is sometimes present near the vaginal area and then gets pushed into the urethra through wiping from back to front after using the bathroom, friction during sexual intercourse and/or wearing clothing that is too tight. Heavy antibiotics use and a suppressed immune system can also cause infections in the urinary tract.

Prevention for bladder infections

The best method of preventing a UTI is to wipe yourself the proper way after using the bathroom. Since E. coli causes approximately eighty percent of bladder infections, it is imperative to remember to wipe the correct way every time you use the bathroom in order to prevent the transfer of E coli from the area around your rectum to the vaginal area. It is also imperative to keep the vaginal area as clean and dry (bacteria love warm moist places) as possible.

Drinking plenty of water, six to eight glasses a day, will also provide help in keeping your urination regular so you empty your bladder regularly. This continual movement of urine will prevent E coli from having the opportunity to stick to the urinary tract. Cranberries are another prevention for urinary tract infections. The cranberry juice makes the urine very acidic which creates a very bad environment for the multiplying of E coli. The most beneficial way to consume cranberries is by taking concentrated cranberry pills or by drinking 100% cranberry juice. Avoid the cranberry juice cocktails you can buy as the cocktails do not have adequate amounts of natural cranberry in them to be effective.

It might sound unbelievable, but the clothes you wear can also promote E coli growth in the vaginal area thus increasing the chance of infection. As well as wearing tight underwear you must also avoid wearing jeans or pants that are too tight so you prevent the growth and possible insertion of E coli into the urethra.
