How To Get Past Your Big Bad Belief Detective

Aug 13, 2008
Do you wish you had a set of beliefs that supported rather than sabotaged you? Would you like to learn how to bypass your Belief Detective?

Most people don't realize that the beliefs that we hold about ourselves are really the sum total of all of the assumptions, conclusions and explanations we've bought into starting when we were babies. They have become the filters by which we see and perceive our world. They have become so much a part of who we "think" we are, that we don't even question their "truth" anymore, when in fact they are not the truth at all.

Why, for example, might one child grow up believing one thing, while a sibling believes something entirely different? Because beliefs are based on the individual's interpretation of an event, not on the actual event itself. So if one child is neglected, they might become needy, always seeking love because they felt rejected. However, the sibling may become independent, because they learned to stand on their own. Same situation, different interpretation, different beliefs.

Since beliefs are the foundation upon which we build our view of the world, its difficult to move forward in life and to break through barriers if our beliefs limit us. They define our world, and anything we do that challenges a deep-seated belief meets with great resistance. I know for me, it feels like an internal tug-of-war! It seems like I have this Belief Detective, and anytime a belief feels threatened, it retaliates.

You've probably experienced how your negative beliefs are insidious and keep you stuck. If you believe you will never succeed, then that belief will keep you from succeeding no matter what actions you take. However, we all have positive beliefs as well, or we would never accomplish any good in our lives. Most of our beliefs are lodged deep in our sub-conscious minds and are hidden from view. We are being driven and directed by these unknown beliefs, so it is challenging to change them if we don't know what they are.

Sometimes we get lucky and beliefs that no longer serve us dissipate by themselves and are replaced by more positive beliefs (Like you believe you can't swim until you do - belief gone!). So what we need to do is uncover the beliefs that have been stopping us and replace them with beliefs that better serve us.

So how do you go about changing these beliefs? Well, first you have to realize that your beliefs, no matter what they are serve some purpose for you. Maybe they keep you safe, maybe they prove you right. Your subconscious wants to help you keep the status quo, so every time you try to change a belief, the Belief Detective stops you. In my case, I started using affirmations, which are positive statements which help to reprogram limiting beliefs. But they were statements aimed at my beliefs so my Belief Detective sabotaged my efforts by making me bored, tired or just too busy to do them. It's very tricky. I had to find a way to bypass my Belief Detective.

In my quest, I tried a variety of techniques including hypnosis, meditation, visualization and quite a few more with some success, but I would still get tired or bored very easily. What finally worked for me was to put my affirmations to catchy little tunes. Have you ever heard a jingle on TV that got stuck in your head all day? Well, I took advantage of that phenomenon and put my positive affirmations into short jingles that I could sing in the back of my mind all day. I called them AttitudeZapz!

Has there ever been a time when you've argued with yourself about song lyrics? Not very likely. Also scientific studies have proven that by keeping the critical part of the the mind, the conscious mind, occupied by music, the uncritical subconscious will be able to accept the affirmations without filtering them. There's no little voice inside your head telling you it's not true. And once these little affirmation jingles get stuck in your head, you can sing them on autopilot and you don't even have to wonder if you believe the words or not. They just melt right into your subconscious mind with no effort at all.

Ha! I'd finally found a way to stop the Belief Detective. It's so easy and because of that, I've been able to grow amazingly fast and you can as well. You can put your affirmations to music too if you want to, but if you'd like some help, why not give AttitudeZapz! a try and put that Belief Detective out of a job.
