Do It Yourself Dried Hydrangea Wreath

Aug 14, 2008
Dried hydrangea wreaths are so beautiful and versatile in a home, and a lot of fun to make. You can either buy already dried hydrangeas for your wreath, or dry your own. The biggest tip to drying your own is when you pick them. The best time is right before the first fall frost. If you pick them too early, they will not dry correctly.

Cut your hydrangea flowers and strip any leaves from the branches. Then either hand upside down in a darkened room to dry, or simply stay upright in a vase to dry. As long as you harvest them at the right time, it's difficult to fail. Try to pick some blooms from different plants for a nice variety of color.

Pick a wreath base you want to use, different ones will create a different look. I like to use either Styrofoam or grapevine best. Take some floral wire and wrap it around the wreath and make a small loop in order to hang on the wall when the wreath is finished.

If using Styrofoam based wreath, use a low melt point glue gun. Take each larger bunch of hydrangea and break up into smaller florets. Add a drop of glue to each floret and poke into the wreath base. Move from top to bottom, left to right, and inside and outside of the wreath base until it's completely filled in.

Balance is what you are looking for. Balance in shape, you don't want any sticking out way above the others, you don't want one side of the wreath to be fuller than the other. Try stepping back and looking at a distance and just think balance of shape.

Color balance is especially important. The reason of doing each bloom systematically over the wreath is to help achieve color balance.

The wreath should be finished now, or you can add small sprigs of baby's breath or other flowers if you want. You can also add a bow for a different effect if you like. Sometimes simplicity is best, but depends on the look you like.

For a grapevine wreath, it's the same principal but a different look. You can tie a bow on the wreath if you want (if you do, do so before adding flowers), or ribbon. I like to leave bare spaces on these to be able to see the grapevine portion as well. Again, look for balance. You can also add dried roses to it or any other type of dried flowers or grasses too. You can get really creative with these and come up with very different looks. Experiment to your heart's content.

If they are in direct sunlight it will be a much shorter time. However, the next year, feel free to strip the old flowers off, and make another with the same base for another year's worth of a gorgeous hand made wreath!

Typically people expect dried floral arrangements to last for years and are disappointed when they don't hold up. This is a myth. Expect them to look good for about a year, that's really all they were meant to hold up for and still look good.
